ADJUSTABLE HOLDER FOR CHALK AND OTHER MARKING SUBSTANCES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 29, 1911.
Patented Dec. 19, 1911.
serial No. 624,260.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMILY CLARE BALE, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and resident of The Girls School, The Acre, Windsor, England, school mistress, have invented an Adjustable Holder for Chalk and other Marking Substances, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a device by which a number of parallel lines can be simultaneously drawn, the distance between the lines being preferably equal but capable of variation.
The device is particularly designed for use in schools and for lecturing and the like purposes in which blackboards are used, but it must be understood that the invention is applicable for use in other places where a number of parallel lines are to be drawn and pencils or other marking instruments can be used in place of the chalk.
The invention may be broadly described as an eXpansible and contractible lattice work having attached to it a number of chalk holders.
I will now describe my invention with reference to the accompanying drawings in which Figure l is a plan View of one form of my chalk holder, Fig. 2 is a side or edge view of a similar holder, and Fig. 3 is a sectional view through the center of the holder, broken away and with the handle in elevation.
The lattice work a has secured to it the parallel bars l) which by the arrangement of the slots e under the heads of the rivets l can be simultaneously brought together or moved apart. The central bar has a handle L secured to it by brackets z' one of which is slotted at j to receive the small bolt 7c to which a fly nut Z is fitted, the arrangement, being such that upon the said nut being slackened the lattice can be extended or contracted and when arranged with the bars at the required position the fly 4nut is tightened and the lattice work and bars are securely held.
The form of chalk holder shown in the drawings consists of a tube-like part e one of which is secured to each bar and into which the chalk f is inserted, a spring g serving to hold the chalk sufficiently tightly to prevent it being pushed back by ordinary pressure on the blackboard or other surface upon which it is used but permitting it to be pushed forward by hand as it is worn down. Any other type of spring or gripping device may be employed and the invention may be carried out in various forms within the scope of the following claim.
my is a member provided with a sharpened point normally carried within the handle L and adapted to be inserted in one of the chalk holders cin order that the device may be used as a compass.
Claim.
A device for holding marking substance and adapted to simultaneously draw a plurality of parallel lines, said device co1nprising an expansible and contractible lattice work, parallel bars secured to said lattice work, one end of each of said parallel bars being bent at an angle thereto; holders secured to said bent ends and adapted to hold said marking substance at an angle to the device; a spring-pressed linger on each of said holders, said fingers pointing in the same direction as said marking substance, a handle secured behind and parallel with one of said parallel bars, said parallel bars and said handle being slotted, and means for clamping said handle to the lattice work and to one of the parallel bars substantially as set forth.
