To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, IRA A. CAMMETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hollywood, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented a new and useful Hatband, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a band for use on the inside of a hat, said band serving thc usual functions of a sweat band andalso providing for ventilation, and for protection of the nerves and blood-vessels of the scalp from injurious pressure.

The main object of the present invention is to provide a hat band of this character with improved means for adjustment of the bands, to fit it to different sizes and shapes of heads, and also to provide for variationin the location of the pressure receiving portions of the hat band.

Another object of the invention is to provide improved Ventilating means for the hat.

A further object of the invention is to prevent perspiration from passing to the outside of the hat.

Other objects of the invention will appear hereinafter.

The accompanying drawings illustrate the invention, and referring thereto: Figure 1 is a vertical section of the hat, on the line .t1-m1 in Fig. 2, with the band in place therein, said band being shown partly broken away. Fig. 2 is a horizonal section on the line a02-w2- in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective of the spacing or supporting member of the band. Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4 4 in Fig. 2. Fig. is a hor-izonal section of the spacing means or member taken through the pivotal connection of the two sections thereof.

The hat indicated at 1 may be of any shape, form and composition, and is provided with a sweat band 2 of leather or other suitable material secured to the body of the hat atthe junction of the crown and brim thereof in the usual manner, and extending up a suflicient distance inside the hat to protect the hat from direct contact with the hair or scalp.

A spacing or supporting member 3 is provided interposed between the body of the hat 1 and the sweat band 2 and consists of suitable material, such as sheet metal, for example, aluminum. Said spacing member is preferably made in two sections 4 and 5,

each consisting of a strip of sheet metal, the two sections being connected together at one end, by a pivotal connection. For this purpose, section 4 is provided with a tubular projection, as shown at 6, near one` end, and the other section 5 is formed at the corresponding end with an opening fitting over said projection, the end of the projection being upset over the section 5 to form an eyelet pivotally connecting the sections. The other end of one of said sections is provided with a plurality or series of slits 8, and the corresponding end of the other section is provided with a tongue 9 of reduced width, which is inserted or threaded back and forth through said slits 8, from one side of the strip to the other. The tongue 9 enters loosely through the slits 8, so as to permit of tilting movement of the sections 4 and 5, enabling them to adjust themselves to the shape of the hat and of the wearers head, such adjustment requiring a slight upward convergence of the parts.

The strips 4 and 5 constituting the spacing member sections are provided with outwardly bent portions 10. The location of these portions on the hat-band corresponds to the position of the principal blood-vessels and nerves leading to the scalp. One of these outwardly bent portions 10 may be provided near the front end of the spacing member at each side of the longitudinal axis thereof, another of such outwardly bent portions near the rear end at each side thereof, and another intermediate out.- wardly bent portion between these front and rear portions at each side, these portions so arranged being adapted to extend over the parts of the scalp which cover the principal nerves and arteries of the scalp, thereby relieving such portions of the scalp, with the arteries and nerves therein, from injurious pressure. These outwardly bent portions may be provided with outwardly punched or struck perforated port-ions indicated at 12, forming slight protuberances, which are-adapted to enter or engage with the crown of the hat, to retain the spacing member lirmly in place.

In order to provide for ventilation without any disfiguring openings at the bottom of the hat band, I provide perforations in the sweat band 2 registering with per- .forations 16 formed at the bends or offsets 10 of the outwardly bent portions 10 when the outwardly bent portions meet the intervening portions of the band. It will be understood that when the hat is placed on the head the portions of the sweat band within t-he outwardly bent portions 10 of the spacing member will not lie in Close oontact with the head, but will bend in toward the spacing' member forming spaces 1T, and the spaces 17 are thereby presented between q'such portions ,of the sweat band and the scalp for passage of air outwardly to the perforations l5, whence such air passes through perforations 16 to the spaces 18 between the spacing member and the crown of the hat,

In applying the spacing member to the hat, it will irst be adjusted by the adjusting means 8 and 9, so as to bring it to the proper size for the -hat and in this operation the adjustment at the rear end of the said member brings the outwardly bent portions 10 as near as possible to the proper spacing, it being understood that the circumferential distance between the principal arteries, etc., will Vary approximately in accordance with the size of the head.

A spacing member for hat bands Compris- -ing two strip sections pivoted to each other at `one end and adjustably connected together at the other end, such adjustable connection comprising a slitted portion in one of said sections, and a tongue in the other of said sections extending through said slitted portion alternately from side to side of the strip,said tongue engaging loosely in said slitted portion to permit of pivotal relative movement of the two sections, whereby the band may adjust itself to the shape of the hat. i
