FEED-BAG AND HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Dec; 19, 1911.
Application filed June 15, 1911. Serial No. 633,331.
To all whom it may concern:
lie it known that I, JOHN QUINCY ADAMS, a citizen of the --United States, residing at \Vestmont, in the county of Camden and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Feed-Bags and Holders; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descriptionof the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. 7
This invention relates to improvements in feed bags and'l olderstherefor, and more particularly to those for detachable engagement with the shafts or tongue of a vehicle.
The object of the invention is in theprovision of a simple, practical and effective device of the character referred to, whereby the feed bag is supported and properly positioned and the weight thereof removed from the animals h rad while feeding.
Another object of the invention is to provide a feed bag which can be readily and conveniently folded in a closed position for carrying the feed and properly protecting the same previous to being consumedby the animal.
With these and otlierobjects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, and the'combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described andclaimed.
in the accompanyingdrawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the complete invention as applied to the tongue of a vehicle; Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the invention as applied to the shafts of a vehicle; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the folding b 1 frame, and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the bag frame in a folded po sition.
In tle illustrative embodiment of the invention, 1 represents a portion of anordinary vehicl tongue, to the opposite sides of which are secured staples or screw eyes 2, adjacent to the outer end thereof. The supporting frame or holder 8 is preferably constructed from a single piece of bar metal to form an oblong body, in the contiguous corners of which are formed loops or eyes at and 5 for the purpose hereinafter described. The rear end loops 5 are connected by the rear transverse end portion 6 of the holder and the longitudinally parallel side members 7 connecting said loops to the front loops-4. Forming a continuation of the front loops l are the inwardly 1 formed' branch members 8 which are twisted together as shown at 9 along a portion of their I length and then spread apart to form two yieldingv engaging arms 10 which are normally spaced apart for receiving the tongue 1,- said twisted portion of the arms forming the continuation thereof, being centrally positioned between the longitudinal parallel side members '7. The terminal ends of the arms 10 are properly formed in hooks 11 for interlocking engagement with the staples-or screw eyes 2 secured to the pole, whereby the bag holder is detachably supported The frame forming apermanent part of the flexible feed bag '11, is designed espe.
cially for the purpose and is foldable and adapted to be opened or extended when r properly positioned upon the supporting rame. In constructing the bag -two U shaped sections 1.2, are employed in the ends of which are formed eyes 13, which engage one another, whereby said sections .are hingedly connected. The sections of the frame of the bag are similarly constructed and each formed of a single piece of bar metal, the longitudinal portions of the sections extending a sufiicient distance beyond the bag proper and being recurved to form' a short transverse member 14, the length of which corresponds substantially to the length of the opposite transverse member 15. The reeurved portions 16 formed in the manner described, are pro erly shaped to form hooks 17 for detachably and interlockingly engaging with the eyes or loops 4: and 5 of the supporting frame 3, whereby the bag is extended and held in an open position while the animals are feeding.
The bag supporting frame shown in Fig. 2 is designed to be detachably secured to the usual shafts of a vehicle, and is also composed of a single piece of bar metal,
t e extremities of which are provided with loops 18 for engagement with the shafts in the manner as clearly shown by passing said shaft through the loops. In the forward end of the supporting frame as constructed, two contiguous corner loops or eyes 19, are adapted to hooks projecting from ends of the bag frame in the manner as shown, whereby the bag wilLbe positioned between the arms connecting the shaft engaging loops 18 with the eyes 19. In carrying out the invention the said bag and its frame are of a cor-struc- 1 removably receive the erly protected and. prevented from tion to be readily and conveniently attached to either of the supporting frames and as clcarl 7 shown when the ba is attached to the supporting frame as constructed, for atthe feed bag when in a closed or folded po sition can be temporarily locked or secured in position by passing a cord through or overthe hooked. ends of said frame whereby the feebcontained within the bag is propbcing re leased therefrom.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention Will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and'the minor details of construction may be resorted to Without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention defined and. claimed.
Having thus described my invention, what v l claim as new is:
here of the-latter noiaoaa 1. in combination with a feed bag supporting'frame haying receiving eyes formed in the contiguous corners thereof, of a feed bag composed of two hingedly connected U-shaped sections, a bag of flexible material secured to theframe, the longitudinal memprojecting outwardly from the bag and recurved to form outwardly projecting hooks which are adapted for interlocking and detachable engagement with the eyes formed in the supporting frame when thebag is in an open or extended position.
A device of the character described, the combination of a rectangular shaped supporting frame having receiving eyes formed in its corners, arms forming c0ntinuations of said frame and centrally dis posed and projecting from onecnd of the said frame, hooks formed on the extremities of said arms and adapted to be engaged with the tongue of a vehicle, and a folding bag having hooks projecting therefrom and adapted to be detachably received by the eyes formed in the supporting frame whereby the bag is yieldingly held in an operative position.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing Witness-es.
JOHN QUINCY ADAMS. 7i itnesses E. MCCOY, H. C. BLASE.
