To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, HAMILTON BROWN and ROBERT BARTON, subjects of the British King, residing at Glasgow, Scotland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Cord Fasteners; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in cord or cable detaching devices for that class of window sashes adapted for sliding and also swinging in the window frame.
One of the principal objects of the invention consists in the provision of a device of the above character which is arranged to be automatically locked to the sash when the same is swung into place, or unlocked from the sash when the same is swung outwardly from the frame.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of said character wherein the member attached to the cord is automatically locked in a suitable position in the groove in which the sash slides when the sash is disengaged from said member.
A still further object is to provide such a member which is arranged to be unlocked when it is attached to the sash, thereby facilitating the connection and disconnection of the sash with the window cords by reason of the fact that the device attached to the cord is always in position to be attached to the sash.
The invention will be more fully described in connection with the accompanying drawings and the novel features thereof will be more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings :Figure 1 .is a perspective view of a window frame with both sashes in their lower position and the front sash swung outwardly, Fig. 2 is a front View of one of the devices locked to the window sash with the parts in the position before the sash is swung outwardly, Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 illustrating the sash when the same is swung outwardly and the device attached to the cord locked to the sash frame, Fig. 4 is a sectional view on line 44 of Fig. 3, and Fig. 5 is a perspective View of an element to which the device attached to the cord is locked when the sash is detached from said device.
Like characters of reference designate similar parts throughout the different figures of the drawings.
As shown the device of our invention includes an element 1 adapted to be secured in the groove of the frame in which the sash slides. Said element is in the form of a plate having flanges 2, 3, in which bolts, openings, or apertures 4, 5 respectively are provided. Said element 1 is located preferably below the cut-away portion of the ridges 6 of the frame between which the sash slides and its function is to lock the device to which the cords 7 are attached in such a position as to readily permit the sash to be attached and detached to and from devices as will hereinafter more fully appear.
Each of the sash frames is provided with a member 8 having a lever engaging portion, preferably in the form of a notch 9 and an attaching portion preferably in the form of a dove-tailed recess 10. Said members are attached to the outer bases of the sash which lie in the grooves 11 of the frame.
A device indicated as a whole at 12 is adapted to be secured to the cables or cords 7 and to fit between the flanges 2, 3 of the element 1 when lying abreast thereof. Each of said devices is preferably provided with two locking bolts 13 and 14 to be shifted into and out of locking engagement with the element 1 by passing through the openings 4 and 5 thereof. The bolt 13 is provided with a slot 16 having concave and convex end walls 17 18 respectively and the bolt 14 is provided with a slot 19 having both end walls 20 and 21 of convex conformation as will be clearly seen by reference to Fig. 1 or 2. A lever 22 is pivotally mounted, preferably between said bolts at 23, and is provided with an arm 24 projecting into the slot 16 and adapted for engagement with the walls thereof, and the rocking lever is also provided with a long arm 25 projecting through the slot or recess 19 and beyond the same and adapted for engagement with the curved walls 20 and 21 thereof. The arm 25 is provided with a suitably curved rear face 26 for engagement with the wall 20 and with a suitably curved front face for engagement with the wall 21.
27 designates that portion of the arm 25 which projects through and beyond the de vice 12 for engagement with the notch 9. A suitably formed dove-tailed portion 28 is provided on the device 12 for engagement within the clove-tailed recess 10 of the member 8. The member or plate 8 is cut away at its upper rear edge so that the rear wall 29 of the notch 9 is not as deep as the front wall 30 of said notch, as will be clearly seen by reference to Fig. 2.
Although the operation may be clear from the foregoing it may be briefly recapitulated as follows :-In order to swing a sash outwardly in the manner shown in Fig. 1 the same is lowered to the bottom of the frame to bring the device 12 abreast of the element- 1 as shown in Fig. 2. When the sash is swung outwardly, the wall 29 of the notch 9 engages the end 27 of the long arm of the lever and swings the same from the position shown in Fig. 2 to the position shown in Fig. 3. This movement of the lever shoots the bolts 13 and 14: into the openings 1 and 5 and locks the device 12 to the element 1. The sash is swung outwardly as shown for any desired purpose. The device 12 remains locked to the element 1 so that when the sash is again swung into the frame the device 12 is held in such a position that the interlocking dove- tailed portions 10 and 28 will register and the wall 30 will engage the end 27 of the lever 22 and swing the same into the position shown in Fig. 1.
Having particularly described our invention what we claim is 1. A device for detachably securing window cords to a swinging slidable window sash comprising in combination, a locking element anchored in a sash groove of the window frame and provided with bolt open ings, a locking device suspended by a sash cord and provided with bolts adapted to have engagement within said openings, a lever pivoted to said device between said bolts and engaging the same, and an element on the sash for actuating said lever, said element and device having means whereby connection and disconnection between the element and device are effected upon move ment of the sash with respect to its frame, substantially as described.
2. A device for detachably securing window cords to a swinging slidable window sash comprising in combination, a locking element anchored in a sash groove of the window frame and provided with an engaging portion, a locking device suspended by a sash cord and provided with a bolt adapted for engagement with said portion, a lever carried by said device and engaging said bolt, and a member on said sash for actuating said lever, said member and device having means whereby connection and disconnection of the member and device are effected upon movement of the sash with respect to the window frame, substantially as described.
3. A device for detachably securing window cords to a swinging slidable window sash comprising in combination, a flanged locking plate anchored in a sash groove of the frame and provided with openings in its flanges, a locking device attached to a cord and provided with oppositely movable sliding bolts provided with slots and adapted for engagement with the openings of said flanges, a lever pivoted to said device between said bolts and having arms engaging the end walls of said slots, one of said arms projecting through the slot cooperating therewith, and an element on said sash provided with a notch for engaging the projecting portion of said lever for operating said bolts in opposite directions, said element and device having interlocking means for effecting connection and disconnection between the element and device when the sash is moved with respect to the window frame, substantially as described.
