Description

Patented Dec.5,1911.
WITNESSES 1 .$e./ l 494 V DANIEL L. ANTHONY, or SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
HOLDER FOR DARNING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 5, 1911.
Application filed April 24, 1911. Serial No. 622,901.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL L. ANTHONY,
a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the countyof San Francisco and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Holders for Darning, of which the following is a specification.
'The present invention relates to a device for holding stockings and other Woven or .,knit material in the operation of darning the same by means of a sewing machine, on which device the stocking or material can be placed in position more quickly and easily than heretofore.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the apparatus in an vice detached.
Referring to the drawing, 1 indicates a cylinder, of length somewhat greater than its diameter, one end of which is formed with anarrow portion 2 reduced 1n diameter, forming on said main portion a circular shoulder 3. Around said reduced portion 2 fits snugly a very short tubular cylin,- der or holder 4, of the same diameter as the cylinder 1, one end of said cylinder 4 abutting against the shoulder 3. The holder is thus maintained in axial alinement with the cylinder 1. The cylinder 4 is formed near its ends with circumferential grooves 5 and 6, and on the terminal portion of the cylindrical surface of the cylinder 1 remote from thereduced portion there is formed a circumferential groove 7. Around the cylinder in this groove is placed a spring clamp 8 consisting of four quadrant-a1 sections 9 connected by spring wires 10 so that the sections form substantially a complete circle. The inner edge of said clamp is rounded, and, when moved along the cylindrical surface of the cylinder 1' until it is in register with the groove 7, the several sections are then compressed by the spring wires 10 and spring into said groove. The cylinder 1 is then preferably placed with the end remote from the reduced portion resting on a table Copies of this patent may be obtained for or other support. The tubular cylinder or holder 4 having then been placed in position around the reduced end of the cylinder 1, which then forms an extension of the holder, a stocking is passed over said cylinder 4 and is moved along said cylinder 1 until the part of the stocking to be darned is brought substantially in the center of the end" of the holder 4. The stocking is then drawn down so as to lie tight and flat across said end. There is then passed over said end and over the stocking lying thereon a spring clamp 11 precisely like the clamp 8 clamping the stocking tightly upon the end of the cylinder 4. The clamp 8 is then moved out of the groove 7 and along the cylindrical surface of the cylinder 1, compressing the stocking betweenthe clamps 8 and 11, and is finally moved on to the other end ofthe cylinder 4, and is sprung into the groove 6 in like manner as the clamp 11 was sprung into the groove 5 and the cylinder 1 is now withdrawn from the cylinder 4. The part of the ing operation is thus compressed tightly bestocking which is not undergoing the darn- W tween said clamps. The cylinder 4 can now readily be inserted below the needle of the sewing machine in position for darning.
other, said holder and extension having means for engaging each other to maintain said holder and extension in axial alinement, said extension having a circumferential groove adapted to receive a spring clamp, and said holder having two circumferential grooves for receiving two such clamps.
In testimony whereofI have hereunto set my hand'in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
, I DANIEL L. ANTHONY.
