UNIE S ALBERT F. COLLINS, OF MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA, ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGN- MENTS, TO WILLIAM A. MGLEOD AND ALBERT F. COLLINS.
STOCKING-HOLDER FOR USE IN DARNING'.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 20, 1909. Serial No. 497,184.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT F. COLLINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of I-Iennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stocking- Holders for Use in Darning; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has for its especial object to provide an improved stocking holder for use in darning by a sewing machine, and to this end, it consists of the novel devices and combinations of devices hereinafter described and defined in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the invention, like characters indicate like parts throughout the several vlews.
Referring to the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a device with a stocking held thereby, some parts of the latter being broken away; Fig. 2 is a plan View of the so-called resisting member of the device; and Fig. 3 is a view corresponding to Fig. l, with the exception that the exposed portion of the resisting member is broken away.
The device is made up of two members, the one being designated as an entirety as a resisting member, and the other being designated as a combined clamping member and guard. Each one of these members is preferably made from a single piece of steel wire.
The wire which forms the combined clamping member and guard is bent to form an annular base ortion 1, which at intervals, is bent upward upon itself to form upright guard arms 2, having outturned finger portions 3 at their upper extremities. Said finger portions are in the form of loops and the said arms 2 are each formed by a double portion of the wire which at their junctions with the annular base 1, are formed with inwardly bowed seats 4;. The annular base 1, thus formed, it will be noted, is made up of a multiplicity of slightly separated sections that are yieldingly connected by the guard arms 2 and their integrally formed fingers 3 in such a manner that the said base is made circumferentially expansible and contractible under comparatively light force.
The resisting member 5 at intervals is formed with short outwardly substantially horizontal bowed arms 6, which arms are adapted to hold that portion of the stocking outside of the resisting member 5 above and clear of the base portion 1 of the other member or so-called combined clamping member and guard.
The resisting member is comparatively rigid, as compared with the other member or combined clamping member and guard which expands against the resisting member to hold the stretched portion of the stocking in place.
When in use, the resisting member 5 is first placed inside the stocking to be darned and that portion of the stocking which has a hole to be darned is stretched over the resisting member. Then the base 1 of the combined clamping member and guard is contracted, pressed against the outside of the stocking and through the resisting member, thereby carrying with it that portion of the stocking to be darned, and when the combined clamping member and guard is released from the hand, it will instantly expand and clamp the stretched portion of the stocking between the resisting member and the combined clamping member and guard, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. When this is done, the rolled portion ofthe stocking will be securely held on the guard arms 2 between the fingers 3 and the arms 6.
In practice, it has been found that the combined clamping member and guard, when applied as above stated, will very securely hold the stocking clamped to the resisting member, and, furthermore, that the said combined clamping member and guard may be Very easily and quickly applied in working position or removed therefrom.
The annular base 1 and the applied resisting member 5 lie very close to the support on which the device is placed so that it is not necessary to remove the needle from the sewing machine in order to bring the stocking holder into working position or into a position where the hole in the stocking may be darned by the use of the machine.
While the device is herein designated as a stocking holder for use in darning and is primarily designed for that use, it is, of course, evident that the same may be used for darning various difierent kinds of cloth or other pliable materials.

Whatlclaimisz A i A 1. A'stoc'king "holder-"for use in darning, comprising a resisting member and a combined clamping member and guard, each constructed of "wire, the said clamping member being approximately annular and bent at intervals to form a multiplicityof vertically extended approximately parallel. guard arms and inwardly bowed seats formed at the junction of said arms with thefbase of-said combined clampingmember and guard, and clamping member and guard is:adapted to'besprung inside ofs'aid resisting memberandarranged to yieldingly hold said resisting member in saidis'eats,
- substantially asdescribed.
2. A stocking holder' for use in'da'rning comprising a resisting member and a combined clamping member-and guard, each constructed o'f wire, the former being bent outward at intervals to form a multiplicity :of outwardly we extended and substantially horizontal arms and the clamping member I being bentat intervals-to form a multiplicity of upwardlyextended guard arms with outturn'ed finger'porti'ons and with inwardly "bowed seats at the junction of the base of said clamping member and said'arms, and which combined "clamping member and 'guardjis adapted' to be'sprung inside'of said resisting member and arranged toyieldingly support theresisting member in said seats, substantially asdescribed.
