EMILY B. GRAHAM, 0F MIAMISBURG, OHIO.
TAPE-NEEDLE.
Application filed July 21, 1914.
and State of Ohio have invented new and useful Improvements in Tape-Needles, of which the toll wing is a specification.
1.11s invention relates to needles and more rly to that class of devices known as bod 1118 employed in threading tape or the like through the hem of garments.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a device of the above mentioned character, possessing extreme simplicity, and so constructec as to eil ectively grip one end 01' the tape to prevent casual disengagement of the latter, while being threaded through the hem of the garment or other casing, and also constructed to provide for the free passage of the device through the hem to prevent tearing or other injury to the garment.
Specifically stated the invention contenr plates the provision of a device for the above mentioned purpose constructed of a single length. of resilient material of U-form to provide an enlarged rounded end portion to permit free passage or". the device through the hem without injuring the same, and having crimped spreadable legs adapted for interlocking engagement with each other with a view of el'l'ectively gripping the end of the tape therebetween.
In the drawing forming a part of this application, like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, in which;
igure 1 is a perspective view of the needle. is a view showing the leg portions of the needle interlocked. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the manner of connecting the tape with the needle.
The invention as above stated, contemplates the provision of a device of the class in question, constructed from a single length or material, preferably resilient wire, the latter being bent into substantially U-iorm and comprising relatively long and short leg portions 5 and 6 respectively. The leg 5 is crimped for a portion of its length approximately midway between its ends as indicated at 7, while the leg 6 adjacent its free end is similarly crimped as at 8 so that when the legs are interlocked as shown in Fig. 2
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Au 31, lull Serial No. 852,259.
the device is provided with an intertwisted shank portion 3) for the purpose of and between which the tape is ellectively gripped to prevent casual disengagement oi the latter from the needle while the latter is being passed through the hem of the garment.
By forming the device from a single length or" material in the above described manner. it is obvious that when the legs are intertwisted as at 9 the needle is provided with an enlarged rounded end or loop portion 10 which permits the needle to pas freely through the hem of the garment without tearing or punching holes through the cloth. Especially is this true with laun d *ied garments where the walls of the hem cling together the result of starching the latter, as the loop 10 gentl separates the walls of the hem to permit the passage of the needle with its tape thus not only protecting the garment against injury hut also Facilitating such operation.
From the foregoing description considered in connection with the accompanying dra Ing it will be manifest that l ha e provided a device vvhich may be readily and easily attached to or removed from the tape, and so constructed as to be higily eiiicient for the purpose intended.
While I have shown and described a practical embodiment of the invention 1 wish to iave it understood that various changes as desired mav be made that fall within the scope of the appended claim, without departing from the spirit of my invention.
What I claim is A bodkin constructed from a single length of resilient material bent into substantially ti -form and providing relatively long and short separable legs. said short leg being adapted to traverse the long leg at relatively remote points, said short leg being first passed under and then over the long leg so that the intermediate portion thereot between said points will be spirally wound about said long leg and the terminal of said short leg engaging the long leg to retain the narts operativelv associated.
In testimony whereof I ailiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
