Description

A. W. JONES.
MUSIC ROLL.
APPLICATION FILED JAN. 13, 1911 1,008,156. I Patented Nov. 7, 1911.
iM/mg v Inventor by I/ I I I Attorneys ALBERT WESLEY JONES, OF BROOKFIELD, MISSOURI.
MUSIC-ROLL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. '7, 1911.
Application filed January 13, 1911. Serial No. 602,463.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT W. JONES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brookfield, in the county of Linn and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Music-Roll, of which the following is a specification.
It is the object of the present invention to provide a novel means for holding, in rolled condition, the music rolls used in piano players. It is customary, in order to hold such rolls in rolled condition, to place about the roll a rubber band but it has been found that this is undesirable for the reason that the roll may not be tightly rolled and the band would then have a tendency to buckle the roll at a point between its ends. The present invention therefore contemplates the provision of a device applied at the end of the roll and adapted to be passed about the roll after the same has been tightly wound, and so engaged with the roll as to normally tend to hold it so wound and in fact to more tightly wind it.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a music roll embodying the present invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view of one end of the music sheet, unrolled. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view through the said end of the sheet and through the device. Fig. 4: is a perspective view of the blank from which a portion of the device embodying the present invention is manufactured.
In the drawings, the numeral 5 indicates an ordinary rolled music sheet such as is employed in any ordinary piano player and the outer end of this sheet is provided with the usual connecting ring 6 adapted to be engaged with the hook usually found upon the take up roll of the player (not shown). The device embodying the present invention consists of an elastic strap which is relatively narrow and is secured at one end as at 8 to the said outer end of the music sheet substantially at the point of connection of the ring 6 with the said sheet. At its free end, the strap 7 has secured to it a hook which is formed from a blank such as illustrated in Fig. i of the drawing, the blank being wider throughout a portion of its length than throughout the remainder of its length and having its widest portion bent about the said free end of the strap 7 as indicated at 9 in the drawings and having its relatively narrow portion bent to form a hook 10.
l/Vhen the roll is wound and is to be placed away in the box usually provided for its reception, the elastic strap 7 is passed around the roll and the hook 10 at its end is engaged with the ring 6 in the manner illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings. It will be observed that in securing the strap about the rolled sheet, it is pulled in the direction of projection of the outer end of the rolled sheet and, being elastic, not only serves to hold the sheet in rolled condition but further normally exerts a pull upon the outer end of the sheet tending to even more tightly roll it.
WVhat is claimed is The combination with a rolled music sheet having a connecting ring pivotally attached to one end thereof and foldable back onto the sheet, of an elastic strap secured to said end of the sheet and close to the ring, said strap having a hook at its free end for engagement with the ring when folded back onto the sheet.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
ALBERT WESLEY JONES.
