To all whom it may concern:

Be itknown that I, JOSEPH HOWARD BUCKLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at lvinchester, in the county of Scott and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in (Jan- Openers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in can openers and has for its object to provide a more convenient, inexpensive, and effective can opener, to reduce the cost of construction, to secure a greater scope in operation, and to obtain other ad vantages and results, some of which may be referred to hereinafter.

Another object of my invention is to provide a can opener that may be used to open cans of various shapes and from the following description taken in connection with the drawing it will be seen-that I have provided a can opener especially adapted for square cans and can be easily used on round cans as well.

Another object of my invention is to provide a can opener of this class which will possess advantages in points of efliciency, durability, is inexpensive of manufacture and at the same time being simple in construction and operation.

lVith the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, pointed out in the claim and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved can opener; and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view showing the opener applied in the position it assumes in the act of cutting the head of the can; and Fig. 3 is a detail view of the cutting knife.

Referring more particularly to the drawings 1 indicates a flat bar of any suitable metal, having a handle 2 formed upon one end thereof, and an annular enlargement 8 formed between the bar and the handle which is provided with a circular opening 4. It will be observed that the handle 2 is disposed at an angle with relation to the bar 1 for greater convenience in manipulating the device. The bar 1 is provided with a longitudinal slot 5 adapted to receive the sliding member 6, said member being adapted to slide within the slot 5 and provided with the flanges 7 adapted to be disposed upon each side of the slot and engage each side of the bar. A piercing point 8 is formed integral with said member and disposed upon one side thereof and adapted to be adjusted to any size can. A disk 9 is r0- tatably mounted within the opening 1 and having the circular plates 10 and 11 secured thereto and disposed upon each side thereof, which provides the annular flanges 12 adapted to be disposed upon each side of the annular enlargement 3 to hold the disk securely within the opening. Secured to the plate 10 is a knife 13 which is provided with a V-shaped cutting edge 14 to prevent the knife from slipping up from the tin which is being cut. Secured to the plate adjacent the knife is the metal guide 15 which serves to engage the edge of the can and guide the knife 13, so that the latter will provide a smooth out concentric with the edge of the can.

lVhen it is desired to open a can the point 8 is pushed through the top of the can at a central point and the bar is then adjusted until the knife 13 is disposed adjacent the inner edge and the guide 15 is disposed on the outer edge of the can, the knife being then pushed through the top to the V-shaped cutting edge 14 and the knife then manipulates by means of the handle 2. It will be readily seen that the disk 9 can be easily rotated so that the knife 13 can be disposed at any desired angle.

While I have shown and described the preferred construction of my invention, it will be obvious that various changes in the details of construction and in the proportions may be resorted to for successfully carrying my invention into practice without sacrificing any of the novel features or departing from the scope thereof.
