Be it known that I, JAMES.CHIsHOLM,a citizen of theUnited States, at present stationedl at Fort Liscum, in the Territory of Alaska,

In carrying out my inventionl employ a handle A,Which is preferably formed integral with the body portion B, which is in the nature of a thick plate, the edge B of which is curved and provided With-an undercut shoulder B2, the edge B and shoulder B2'being1 constructed upon different curves and meeting at the point or end B2. The body is formed with an extension or projection O at the side opposite the point or end B2, said projection or extension having'an oblique slot C' produced therein and in which works the shank D of the cutting-blade D, said -shank having a head D2, Whichrests upon the top of the extension, being wider than the slot. An adjustingscrew E passes transtudinally within theoblique slot, the inner end being journaled at the end of said slot, and a collar E2 is fastened upon the screw and adapted to bear against the opposite end of the slot for the purpose of holding the screw in itsrproper longitudinal position, so that by turning the head' E in either direction the blade can be adjusted as desired.- The undercut shoulder B2 is produced upon a slight inclination, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 4, in order to prevent slipping during the operation of the device.

Having thus fully described .my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
l. A can-opener having a body provided with av curved undercut shoulder, va slotted extension orprojection, the cutting-,blade adjustably arranged in said I slotted extension, and an operating-handle connected to the body, as set forth.
2. A can-opener comprising a body portion having a curved undercut shoulder, an 0bliquely-slotted extension or projection, a cutting-blade having its shank arranged in said slotted extension, and means arranged within the slot and connected to the shank for the purpose of adjusting the blade, as set forth.
3. A cani-opener comprising a body portion having a curved edge and a curved undercut shoulder, the obliquelyslotted extension or projection, the cuttting -blade having its shank located in said slot, the adjustingscrew workingin the slot'aud passing through the shank and theoperating-handle integral with the body portion,. substantially asset forth.
