BASE-BALL GLOVE.

Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Got. 17, 1911.
Application filed May 6, 1910. Serial No. 559,663.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN GAMBIE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Base-Ball Gloves, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in base ball gloves or mits, and pertains more particularly to means for reinforcing and supporting the padding or lining structure of the glove.
The Object of my invention is to produce a base ball glove provided with a padding structure of ordinary form adapted to fit in an Outer cover, having finger and thumb members, the Outer ends Of the finger portions Of the padding being provided with reinforcing stalls of soft leather or similar material, and a further object thereof is to provide a longitudinal strip of similar material stitched upon the face of the Outer finger portion and side of the palmv portion, whereby is imparted to the assembled glove a support and bracing without impairing its flexibility.
To these ends my invention includes the `combinations and arrangements of component parts to be hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating my invention in which like reference characters indicate similar parts, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a padding structure for base ball gloves; Fig. 2 is a rear view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 1 1 of Fig. 1.
Referring now to the drawings, 1 designates the inner pad or padded lining of a base ball glove, comprising a palm portion 2, finger portions 3 and thumb member 4l. Said pad may be made of felt or other suitable ieXible material. For the purpose of strengthening and supporting the padding, I provide reinforcing stalls 5, preferably of soft leather, upon the ends of the finger portions which may be stitched longitudinally upon the sides of the padding. As shown in the drawings, the face of the small finger and side of the palm portion is faced with a strip 6 Of soft leather or similar material which is stitched longitudinally at its edges and around its outer end to the padding material, by which said finger portion is supported by the tension of the strip against bending backward.
It has been found in use, that the structure of the pad and reinforcements described, materially braces the fingers and hand of the wearer in catching a ball without impairing the flexibility of the glove, and at the same time imparting protection to the portions of the fingers and hand not heretofore provided.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination with an inner pad for base ball gloves, of a reinforcing strip of flexible material stitched longitudinally upon the face of the outer Or small finger portion and the side of the palm portion, whereby the said finger portion is supported by the tension of said strip against bending backward, substantially as described.
2. The combination with an inner pad for base ball gloves, Of reinforcing stalls of flexible material stitched upon the outer ends of the finger portions, and a longitudinal strip of similar material stitched upon the face of the outer or small finger portion and along the side of the palm portion, whereby the said finger portion is supported by the tension of said strip against bending backward, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto signed my name to this specication, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
