carrier) s'rATEs PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK MAURO, OF DENVER, COLORADO, ASSIGNOR 0F ONE-FOURTH TO FRANK SERPICO, OF DENVER, COLORADO.
KEYHOLEGUARD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed June 13, 1911.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK MAURO, a citizen of the United States, residing at Denver, in the county of Denver and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Keyhole-Guards; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. 7
This invention relates to keyhole guards and has for an object to provide an apparatus to apply to a door in combination with a common or rim lock for guarding the keyhole to prevent the insertion of a key.
A further object of the invention is to provide a guard wholly independent from the look but attached to the door adjacent to and covering a part of the lock with means to swing into position to insert a stud in the keyhole to prevent the introduction of a key from the opposite side.
With these and other objects in view the invention comprises certain novel constructions, combinations and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the drawings :-Figure 1 is a perspective view of a conventional rim lock with a fragment of a door and the keyhole guard associated therewith. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view as on line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 8 is an enlarged section taken on line 2-2 showing only the locking leaves.
Like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
In Fig. 1 a conventional rim lock 10 is shown attached to a fragment of a conventional door 11. As the lock forms no part of the present invention which is intended to be associated with any ordinary rim look, no further description of such lock will be given.
A band 12 is employed which is attached to the door as by the employment of screws 13 and spans the lock 10 adjacent the edge of the door but without necessarily touching or coming in contact with such lock. Somewhat below the center of the band 12 a hinge 14 is provided to which is hinged a leaf 15 having at its end opposite the hinge 14 a resilient extremity 16 proportioned to pass over and engage under the bead 17 of the lock 10. In alinement with the keyhole 18 of the lock, the leaf 15 is provided with a hinge 19 to which is hinged an auxiliary leaf 20 which likewise has a resilient extremity 21 proportioned to engage under the head 17 of the lock the same as the extremity 16, as plainly shown at Fig. 1. The leaf 20 carries a stud 22 proportioned and positioned to pass into the keyhole 18 of the lock and to prevent the insertion of a key into such keyhole, as indicated in dotted lines at Fig. 2. The leaf 15 carries a spring 23 resiliently engaging the offset 24 integral with the leaf 20 so that when the stud 22 is removed from the keyhole the spring 23 will hold the leaf 20 resiliently away from such keyhole.
I claim 1. The combination with a rim lock, of a frame adapted to be secured adjacent the lock, a leaf hinged to the frame proportioned to fold over and engage the lock, and an auxiliary leaf hinged to said first mentioned leaf proportioned to fold over and engage the lock, and a stud carried by the auxiliary leaf proportioned to occupy a portion of the keyhole of the lock.
2. The combination with a rim lock, of a frame proportioned to span the lock, a leaf hinged to the frame and proportioned to yieldingly engage the side of the lock opposite the frame, an auxiliary leaf hinged to the first leaf and provided with a resilient end proportioned to engage the edge of the lock, and a stud carried by the auxiliary leaf proportioned to partly fill the keyhole of the lock.
3. As an article of manufacture, a frame piece, a leaf hinged to the side of the frame piece, a resilient offset at the end of the leaf, an auxiliary leaf hinged to the side of the leaf, a resilient offset from the auxiliary leaf, and a stud extending laterally from the auxiliary leaf.
&. As an article of manufacture, a strap lock, and a stud outstanding from the last proportioned to span a lock and to be sementioned leaf engaging said keyhole. 10 cured to'a door a leaf pivoted to one side of In testimony whereof I afiiX my signathe strap and extending laterally therefrom, ture in presence of two Witnesses.
a second leaf pivoted to the side of the first FRANK MAURO. mentioned leaf and extending laterally Witnesses:
therefrom in substantial parallelism With CABLE l/VHITEHEAD,
the strap and covering the keyhole of said ALBERT L. VoGL.
