UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH FISHMAN, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR 'IO LOTH CLOTHING COMPANY,
\ OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, A CORPORATION OF MISSOURI.
TROUSERS.
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, JosErH FISHMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of'St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Trousers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
This invention relates to a certain new and useful improvement in trousers or the like.
The object of my invention is to provide a pair of trousers with a front pocket, commonly known as a watch pocket, a rear or inside and hidden pocket, said pockets being preferably disposed one directly behind the other and having separate and independent mouths or openings to the exterior, and a flexible flap adapted to interchangeably, as it might be said, cover slits or mouths of said pockets and thereby close one or the other of said pockets and to be releasably secured in such closed covering positions, said flap being also adapted, when in closed position in connection with said front or watch pocket, to provide what is known as a belt strap.
With this object in view, my invention resides in the novel construction and arrangement of said flap and pockets on a pair of trousers and in the novel combination of the same, all as will hereinafter be described and afterward pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a front elevational view of a pair of trousers embodying my invention, the belt-and-pocket-flap being shown in operative position closing the front or watch pocket and the rear or hidden pocket being open; Fig. 2 is a fragmentary front view of a portion of said pair of trousers, showing the belt-andpocket-fiap in open inoperative position; Fig. 3 is a detail sectional View on the line 33, Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view of the pair of trousers shown in Fig. 1 with the belt-and-pocket-flap in operative position closing the rear or hidden pocket, the front or Watch pocket being open.
Referring to said drawings, wherein like reference numerals refer to like parts throughout the several views, 1 indicates a pair of trousers of any suitable material, said trousers being provided, as is usual,

ably comparatively small in size and is commonly known as a watch pocket. Pocket 4 is of ordinary construction and may be formed of any suitable material, and is sewed or otherwise suitably secured in I proper position, as shown, between waist band 2 and waist lining 3, the slit or mouth 4 of said pocketpreferably opening outwardly, as is usual, and alining with the lower edge of said waist-band 2. 5 indicates the rear or hidden pocket. This pocket 5 is also of ordinary construction and suitable material, and is sewed or otherwise secured in proper position, as shown, preferably directly in the rear of front pocket 4 and be tween said pocket 4 and said waist-lining 3, the slit or mouth 5 thereof preferably opening upwardly, see particularly Figs. 3 and 4. Vhile these pockets 4 and 5 are preferably of substantially the same size, yet they may vary in size, if desired. Sewed or otherwise suitably secured between said pockets 4 and 5, as shown, is a suitable preferably flexible flap 6 adapted, as will be seen, to interchangeably cover and thereby close the mouths of said pockets 4 and 5, flap 6 be ing preferably provided with a button-hole 6 for purposes hereinafter appearing. When it is desired to close said rear or hidden pocket 5, flap 6 is turned down inside said trousers over the mouth 5 of said pocket and is then preferably attached by means of said button-hole 6 to a button or the like 8, being thereby, as shown particularly in Fig. 4, releasably secured in such closed covering position. hen said flap is in such position, as will be seen, the mouth 4 and pocket 4 is uncovered and said front pocket open. WVhen it is desired to close said front pocket 4, said flap 6 is turned down outside said trousers over the mouth 4 of said pocket and is then likewise preferably attached by means of button-hole 6 to a similar button or the like 7, being thereby, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, releasably secured in this closed covering position; and when said flap is in such latter position, the mouth 5 of pocket 5 is uncovered and said rear pocket open. And When said flap is in such latter position closing said front pocket 4, it is also adapted, as shown clearly in Figs. 1 and 3, to provide what is known as a belt-strap for holding or maintaining a belt or the like in proper trouser supporting position. I might add that, while said flap 6 may be made of any suitable, preferably flexible, material, and of one or more pieces of material, it is preferably made of two pieces of different material sewed or otherwise suitably secured together, the inner piece a being preferably like or similar to the material of trousers 1, so that, when said flap is in position covering the mouth 43 of pocket 4, it will neatly match said trousers, and the outer piece .7) being preferably like or similar to the material of waistlining 3, so that, when said flap is in po sition covering the mouth 5 of pocket 5, it will likewise neatly match said lining. It will be clear that the trousers 1 may, and preferably are, as shown in Fig. 1, provided on each side of the front thereof with a pair of such pockets and a covering or closing flap therefor.
My said pockets may be conveniently used for many purposes, and the usefulness of my invention will be obvious. My invention is simple, may be readily arranged on trousers of ordinary manufacture, and forms, as will be readily seen, an advantageous addition thereto.
I am aware that minor changes in the arrangement, construction, and combination of my said flap and pockets on or with a pair of trousers may be made without departing from the nature and principle of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. As a new article of manufacture, a pair of trousers having a front pocket in proximity to the waist-band thereof, a second pocket in the rear of said front pocket, and a flap between said pockets, said pockets having separate and independent mouths or openings to the exterior and said flap being adapted to interchangeably cover the mouths, and thereby close one or the other, of said pockets and to provide, when covering the mouth of said front pocket, a beltstrap for said trousers; substantially as described.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a pair of trousers having a front outwardly-opening pocket in proximity to the'waist-band thereof, an upwardly-opening second pocket in the rear of said front pocket, the openings or mouths of said pockets to the exterior being separate and independent, a flexible flap secured between said pockets adapted to interchangeably cover the mouths, and thereby close one or the other, of said pockets and to provide, when covering said front pocket, a belt-strap for said trousers, and means adapted to releasably secure said flap in its said closing positions; substantially as described.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
