UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EMIL J. KUI-IN, OF WEST ENGLEWOOD, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-FOURTH T0 WILLIAM C. MOORE, JR, 013 NEW YORK, N. Y.
BAG-FASTENING HANDLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 30, 1911.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMIL J. KUHN, a citizen of the United States, residing at West Englewood, in the county of Bergen and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bag- Fastening Handles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in hand bags and especially in the provision of an improved handle and fastening device therefor.
The invention consists in various details of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
I illustrate my invention in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a hand bag with my handle fasteners attached. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective showing the bag opened, and Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional View, parts being shown in elevation.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates an ordinary hand bag having two jaws B and B, the former of which is provided with apertures for the reception of the screws K, each adapted to engage interiorly formed threads in a recess formed in the head E which is held against the outer face of the jaw B, each head being provided with a slot E through which a pin F passes and upon which latter the ends of the handle H are pivotally mounted. Each of said screws is provided with a slot K in corresponding ends and a second handle N is pivotally mounted one in each of the slots of the screw. The ends of the handle N, which are contracted as at N, pass through the slots 0 formed in the hollow conical-shaped projections O of the plates 0 which latter are fastened to the outer face of the jaw B. Each jaw B has an opening for the reception of the screw which passes into the conical-shaped member when the jaws are closed.
When it is desired to open the bag, the handle havingthe contracted arms is allowed to fall toward a horizontal position, after which the jaw B may swing freely upon the arms of the handle N, being guided as it swings upon the upper edges of the latter. When the jaws are closed, the two bail-shaped handles maybe swung together, thus securely lockin the bag and serving as a convenient means or carrying the same.
What I claim to be new is A hand bag having jaws which are hinged together, screws fastened to one jaw and having threaded ends projecting therethrough, heads mounted upon the threaded ends of the screws and bearing against the adjacent jaw, each head provided with a slot, handles, the ends of which are pivotally mounted in said slots, each screw having a slotted end, plates fastened to the other jaw, which latter is apertured for the reception of the slotted ends of said screws, each plate having a hollow conical-shaped projection which is slotted at its outer end, a handle pivoted to the slotted ends of the screws and adapted to swing through said slots in the conical-shaped projections of the plates.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
EMIL J. KUHN.
