GEORGE BEUOY AND GEORGE H. LOSI-IBOUGH, 0F CEDAR VALE, KANSAS.
. CAPONIZING INSTRUMENT.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, GEORGE BEUoY and GEORGE H. LosHBoUoH, citizens of the United States, residing at Cedar Vale, in the county of Chautauqua and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Caponizing Instruments, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
Our invention relates to instruments for caponizing, and has for its object to provide an easily operated and efficient device for this purpose having the functions of grasping the organs to be operated on and holding them firmly until the operation is performed.
With the foregoing and other objects in View, the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts whereby an instrument of this character is produced that will possess advantages in points of efiiciency, durability, and is inexpensive of manufacture, and at the same time being simple in construction and operation.
The invention consists in the novel features of construction hereinafter described, pointed out in the claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of our improved instrument; Fig. 2 is a top plan view; Figs. 3 and 4 are detail perspective views of the parts comprising our invention.
In referring more particularly to the drawings the numerals 1 and 2 indicate two rods or lengths of wire of any suitable size and weight. These rods have one of their ends bent upon themselves to form suitable handles 3 and 3'. Just below the handles the rods are both bent twice at obtuse angles as shown at 4 and 5 and having bends 6 and 6 and one of said rods being extended upon the opposite side of the other so as to limit the movement of the ends of the rods. The rod 1 is then bent at right angles intermediate of its ends forming a pintle portion 7 for the rod 2 which is coiled upon the pintle 7 as shown at 8. The rods are then bent slightly inwardly and oppositely disposed as shown at 9. The ends of the rods 1 and 2 are tapered down into a point 9, and then bent upon themselves to form grasp- Specification of Letters Patent.

ing members 10 and 10 which are oppositely disposed so that their edges abutwhen brought together in the act of closing. The outside edges of the grasping members are beveled as shown at 11 and 11 so as not to pinch or take hold of the arteries or other blood vessels when grasping the organ to be removed during the operation. In having the rods bent slightly inwardly at 9 it will enable the person who is to perform the operation to have a clear view of the work, and it will also serve to strengthen the instrument.
To those familiar with caponizing 1 the operation of the instrument on the fowl, will be readily understood. Hence it is sufiicient to say only that the instrument is used to grasp the organ to be operated upon and hold it firmly during the operation, and notinjure any of the arteries or blood vessels surrounding the organ. In grasping the organ the members 10 are to pass entirely over it and grasp the chord connected to the part, so as to permit of straightening out the chord that it may be severed some distance from the part itself, thereby avoiding any accidental mishaps which so often occur where the chord is severed close to the part.
Vhile we have shown and described the preferred form of our invention, we do not limit ourselves to its exact construction but desire to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope thereof.
It is noted that various changes in the details of construction and in the proportions may be resorted to for successfully carrying our invention into practice without sacrificing any of the features or departing from the scope thereof.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed is 1. A caponizing instrument comprising two rods having suitable handles formed at one end thereof, a pintle portion formed on one of said rods, the other of said rods being coiled and mounted on said pintle, grasping members formed on the end of said rods opposite said handles and said rods being bent slightly inwardly and oppositely disposed to limit the movement of the grasping members. D
2. A caponizing instrument comprlsmg two rods having suitable handles formed at one endthereof, one of said rods being bent at right angles. intermediate of its ends to form a pintle the other of said rods being coiled and mounted on said pintle, and
