To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAooB EHMANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Arlington, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain Improvements in Bag-Fasteners, of which the following isa specification.
This invention relates to that class of fasteners which are placed on a bag frame near the opposite ends of the same, in addition to a central lock or catch, to hold said ends of the .frame more securely closed, and more particularly the invention relates to fasteners of that sort which operate by a sliding motion longitudinally of the bag frame.
The objects of the invention are to secure simplicity and strength in such a fastener; to enable the same to be manufactured cheaply; to facilitate assembling of the parts of the fastener, and to avoid looseness of parts when assembled; to secure an entire unbroken outer surface, and to obtain other advantages and results as may be brought out in the following description.
Referring to the accompanying drawings. in which like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in each of the several figures, Figure 1 is a plan view of one end of a bag frame to which my improved fastener is applied; Fig. 2 is a plan of the blank from which the slide is made, and Fig. 3 is an edge view of the same; Fig. 1 is a cross-section of the slide complete; Fig. 5 is a plan of the base piece upon which the slide is mounted; Fig. 6 is a side view of the slide being brought into assembled relation to the base piece; Fig. 7 is a vertical central longitudinal section of the fastener complete; and Fig. 8 is an underneath view of the same; Fig. 9 is a detail view of a certain spring detached from the rest of the part-s.
In said drawings, 1 and 2 indicate the opposite frame sections of a bag 3, one of said frame sections, as 1, carrying a hooked member 1 adapted to extend beneath the other frame section 2 and be engaged by the slide 5 of the fastener member thereon. Said slide 5 is stamped out of sheet-metal in a single integral piece, and comprises an elongated shell 6 with wings 7, 7 projecting from its lateral edges about midway be tween its ends. These wings 7 are folded toward each other and pressed close against the inner side and bottom surface of the shell 6 until they meet at the median line of said shell, from which point the said wings lie flatwise against each other and extend perpendicularly out of the trough-like cavity of the shell, forming a tongue 8. At the outer end of the tongue, one of the wings is notched at its extremity and the other has a tip 9 adapted to be bent over into said notch to hold said wings securely together at their edges. The wings 7 are preferably narrowed outside of the plane of the edges of the shell 6, forming shoulders 10, and at a little distance from said shoulders the tongue has at its opposite edges lateral lugs projecting in general direction parallel to said shoulders. These lugs are each double and formed by ears 11 projecting from the edges of the narrowed portions of the wings which lie flatwise together. The said lugs are spaced from the shoulders 10 and plane of the edges of the shell 6 a sufficient distance to receive the base 12 and spring 13 hereinafter described, the ears 11 which form said lugs being afterward spread apart to connect the sliding shell to said parts. For this purpose the edges of the cars 11 next to the shoulders are inclined outwardly from the wings away from the said shoulders, so that they will properly engage the intermediate parts when bent out over them, even though said parts vary in thickness in different fasteners.
The base piece 12 is stamped out of sheet metal, with side walls 14.- to rest at their edges upon the bag-frame section 2 and a top 15 for the sliding shell 5 to slide upon.
The said edges have lugs 16 to extend through slits in the bag frame and be bent over to secure said base piece 12 thereto, and its top 15 is slotted longitudinally, as at 17, to receive the tongue 8 of the slide 5 and form a slideway therefor. The leaf spring 13 fits into the base 12 to lie against the top of its chamber, and is slotted in registration with the slot 17 of the top of the base. It is underneath this spring 13 that the ears 11 are spread as above described. Preferably the spring 18 is bowed downward between its ends, and slight transverse ridges 18, 18 are provided to detain the sliding shell in its open and closed positions on opposite sides of said ridges, respectively.
The edges of the ears 11 next to the shoulders 10 are curved away from said shoulders 10 outward from the attachment of the ears to the wings 7, as clearly shown in the drawings and particularly Fig. 2. This insures that when said ears are spread, as shown in Fig. 8, they will hold the spring 13 and base piece 12 tightly between themselves and the shell 6, even though said spring and base piece vary somewhat in thickness. That is, if the spring and base piece are a little thicker than the average the wings will not spread so far apart, but engage at a point farther out from their attachment to the wings 7. This enables a tight fit to be always secured in assembling the fastener, withoutany special attention being given to the exact thickness of the stock such as would increase the cost of it.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is 1. In a bag fastener, a slotted base, a shell slidable on said base, a tongue extending from said shell down through the slot of said base, and marginal ears on said tongue underlying the base piece each having an edge next said base piece which inclines away therefrom from the tongue toward the extremity of the ear.

In a bag fastener, a base piece with a slotted top, a shell slidable on said top and having lateral wings bent inwardly toward each other into flat-wise contact substantially perpendicular to the bottom of the shell and forming a tongue projecting through the slot of the base piece, and lugs on opposite edges of said tongue each comprising registering ears on the wings adapted to be spread apart to overlie the bottom of the base piece- 3. In a bag fastener, the combination of a slotted base, a slide mounted on said base having an integral wing bent from one of the edges adapted to engage said base inwardly against the body of said slide and downwardly substantially perpendicular to the bottom of said body and forming a tongue extending through the slot of the base, and means for preventing withdrawal of the said tongue from said slot.

5. In a. bag fastener, the combination of a slotted base, a slide mounted on said base having lateral wings bent inwardly toward each other and downwardly substantially perpendicular to the bottom of the slide and forming a tongue projecting through the slot of the base, means holding the tongue portions of said wings together and lugs at opposite edges of said tongue each comprising registering ears on the wings adapted to be spread apart to overlie the base.
6. In a bag fastener, the combination of a slotted base, a slide mounted on said base having lateral wings bent inwardly'toward each other and downward in fiatwise contact with each other for their end portions substantially perpendicular to the bottom of the slide and forming a tongue projecting through the slot of the base, and means for preventing withdrawal of said tongue from said slot.
7. In a bag fastener, the combination of a slotted base, a slide mounted on said base having lateral wings bent inwardly toward each other against the body of said slide and downwardly substantially perpendicular to the bottom of said body and forming a tongue projecting through the slot of the base, and means for preventing withdrawal of said tongue from said slot.
8. In a bag fastener, the combination of a' slotted base, a slide mounted on said base having lateral wings bent inwardly toward each other and downwardly substantially perpendicular to the bottom of said body and forming a tongue projecting through the slot of the base, means holding the tongue portions of said wings together, and means for preventing withdrawal of said tongue from said slot.
9. In a bag fastener, the combination of a slotted base, a slide mounted on said base having lateral wings bent inwardly toward each other against the body of said slide and downwardly substantially perpendicular to the bottom of said body and forming a tongue projecting through the slot of the base, means holding the tongue portions of said wings together, and means for preventing withdrawal of said tongue from said slot.
10. In a bag fastener, the combination of a slotted base, a slide mounted on said base having lateral wings bentinwardly toward each other and downwardly substantially opposite edges of said tongue each comprising registering ears on the wings adapted to be spread apart to overlie the base.
11.
