SNAP-LOCK FOR POCKET-BOOKS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 427,790, dated May 13, 1890.

To (1, whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ERNST OLDENBUSCH, of the city and county of New York, in the State of New York, have invented. a certain new and useful Improvement in Snap-Locks for Pocket-Books, of which the following is a specification.

My improvement relates to snap-locks for locking the flaps of pocket-books to the main or body portion thereof.

I will describe my improvement in detail, and then point out the novel features in the claim.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a Vertical section of a lock for a pocket-book embodying my improvement. Fig. 2 is a plan or top View of a blank previous to being stamped up. Fig. 3 is a view looking from the under side of the said blank after the same has been stamped up. Fig. 4 is an edge View of a blank after the same has been stamped up, the same being shown as inverted. Fig. 5 is a View in perspective of a portion of a purse with the lock attached.

In carrying out my improvement I take a piece of metal and stamp or otherwise cut from it a blank A, which blank comprises a substantially circular main portion a, from which extend prongs a, of which I have shown three. Upon one side of the main or body portion A are formed projections c and intermediate of the projections a a tongue a In the projections a are formed holes a and in the main or body portion a is formed a hole at. The blank, having been thus cut, is subjected to the action of dies and is stamped up into the form shown more clearly in Figs. 1, 3, and A.

About the edge of the main or body portion a there is formed a flange b, from which the prongs a project at approximate right augles to the plane of the main or body portion a. Adjacent to the projections a there is formed upon the upper side of the blank a rib or projection Z). F designates a snap-plate, by which a flap is secured at its free end to the main or body portion of a pocket -book. This snap-plate comprises a portion f, which portion is substantially circular, or, in otherwords, conforms in shape to the main or body portion c of the blank A. Upon one of its edges it is provided with an inwardly-bent tongue or projection f, which inwardly-bent projection forms near its extremity a cam f At the sides of the projections f are lugs f which lugs are adapted to be passed through the holes a in the projections a Said projections are then squeezed toward each other, and the snap-plate thus becomes journaled upon the projections a and may be swung freely to and fro thereon. The cam f bears upon the spring (I. hen the snap-plate F is raised or lowered, the cam will deflect the spring d, and should the snap-plate be shut down upon the pin D, as it will be in order to secure the fiap,the spring will hold it in such closed condition. IVhen the snap-plate has been sprung into the other position, or that illustrated in Fig. l, in order to release the flap the cam f will strike against the inwardly-bent tongue a which latter then acts as a stop to prevent a too extended move ment of the snap-plate in this direction.

It will. be seen that by my improvement a ready means is afforded for preventing the snap-plate from being opened too far.
