ABEL H. HUNTINGTON, OF GALESBURG, ASSIGNOR TO WILLIAM OF NEPONSET, ILLINOIS.
McKEE,
Letters Patent No. 100.153, dated February 22, 1870.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same To all whom tt may concern Be it known that I, ABEL H. HUNTINGTON, of Galesburg, in the county of Knox, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Signal-Boxes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings-making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a plan view of my sigrial-box.
Figure 2 is a sectional view on the line a: a: of fig. 1 and Figure 3 is a sectional View on the line y y of fig. 1.
My invention relates to signal-boxes, and isintended as an improvement upon the patent of \VILLIAM M0- KEE,(121116(1 April 28, 1868. Theimprovement consisting in providing means whereby the signal-flag is antomaticall y shown in a horizontal position, instead of the perpendicular position represented in said patent.
The letter A of the drawings represents a-tube with a groove on each side marked a, resting upon asquare hollow base marked B.
Tile letters 0 and (l are respectively grooved switches adjusted in 'or inside of the base B, in the manner shown, and forming continuous guides for the movements of the ears and pins of the sliding block D next mentioned.
LetterD is-a sliding block, constructed with an ear, 0, on each side, as shown, which said ears move in and are guided by the switches c, and the side grooves of the tubes therewith connected.
The letter E is the flag-stafi'adjusted to the side of block D, as represented, and i Letter F is-the flag attached thereto.
The end or side of block D opposite the flag-staff is weighted with lead or other heavy substance, for
' the purpose hereinafter stated, and it is also provided with pins,-s, which move in and are guided by the switches 11.
The letter at is a slot cut in the side of the base B for the purpose of allowing the flag-stafi to be moved to a horizontal position, as hereinafter mentioned.
The letter '0 is a cord attached to the leaded side of block D, by. means of which said block and the flagstalf attached thereto are drawn upward in the tube.
My device is operated as follows:
The operator takes holdof the cord '0 and therewith draws the sliding block and stall and flag upward in the tube to any desired position. Whenever be desires to exhibit the flag, he releases the cord.
The block D, guided by its ears and pins, slides down the grooves of the tube, the ears entering the switches 0 until they reach the bottom thereof.
The leaded side of the block, guided by the pins 3,
pass into the slots d, and throws the flag-stafl and nesses.
