Be it known that I, MARTIN McCoY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pleasant, in the county of Martin and State of Kentucky, have invented new and useful Improvements in Adjustable RatchetlVrenches, of which the following is a speciication.
This inventi-on relates to improvements in wrenches.
rIhe object of the present invention is to improve the construction of ratchet wrenches and to provide a simple, inexpensive and efficient one adapted to be readilyadjusted to suit the diameter of a pipe, rod or nut and firmly grip the same.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter fully described illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a ratchet wrench constructedy in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view upon the line 3-3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the adjusting wheel. Fig. 6 is a similar view of one of the adjusting jaws. Fig. 7 is a perspective view'of one of the removable adjusting wheel sustaining members.
In the accompanying drawing the numeral 1 designates a shank or stock carrying a head 2 and constituting a handle, andv ther said head 2, which is preferably in the form of a ring,` as shown, to provide a circular opening is formed with longitudinally ar-y ranged oppositely disposed recesses or pockets 3 and 4, the same also communicating with the sides of the shank or yhandle 1. The numeral 11 designates a flangedV ratchet wheel which is adapted to be posi tioned within the circular head of the wrench and to have its teeth 12 engaged by the diametrically oppositely arranged dogs 5 and 6, depending, of course, upon which way the ratchetwheel is to be rotated or when the ratchet wheel it to be held against rotation. The ratchet wheel 11 is centrally provided with a rectangular depression' 13 which provides a Substantially horizontal wall and right angular walls 15. The horizontal wall or face 14 is centrally provided with'a longitudinally extending opening 16.
yThis opening 16 is of arectangular formation and is of a lesser width and length than the wall 14. The said opening .16 is adapted for the reception of the downturned reduced portions or ends 17 provided upon thel adjustablejaws 18. These jaws 18 may have their engaging faces 19 serrated if desired, so that the said jaws will readily engage `with a pipe or rod. The body portion of each of the slidingjaws 18 is of a width and thickness equaling the width and depthl of the depression 13. The horizontal wall'14 provided by the depressionl is adaptedto` lie in a parallel plane with the face of the stock or shank opposite to that engaged by the offset of the ratchet wheel, and the upper faces of the body of the movablejaws are each provided with spaced teeth 20.
The numeral 21 desi nates the adjusting T is wheel 21 is cen# trally provided with an annular opening and has its under face formed withaspiral flange 22, the same being adapted to'engage with the `teeth 2O formed'upon themovable jaws. .f The periphery of the adjusting wheel 21 is milled' as atl 23, -so'thatjthefsaid wheel' wall projects within the walls 15 of the ring. These rounded walls are also inclined from the top of the ratchet wheel to the bottom thereof and are adapted for the reception of the dove- tailed ends 27 and 28 of the adjusting wheel securing members 29 and 30. Both of these elements 29 and 30 have their inner faces rounded and beveled or inclined to agree with the inclined inner faces of the V-shaped or dove-tailed cut-away portions provided by the ratchet wheel. The inner faces 31 of each of the members 29 and 30 are each formed adjacent their upper portions with a reduced straightened face, the side walls of which terminate a slight distance beyond the walls 15 of the said ratchet wheel, while the dove-tailed portions of each of the retaining members are arranged in a parallel line with the walls provided by the longitudinal opening of the ratchet wheel to provide for the free sliding` of the depending` portion 17 of the sliding jaws. These dove-tailed portions are each provided with suitable openings, as are the dove-tailed recesses, the latter being threaded and these openings are adapted for the recept-ion of suitable removable securing elements designated by the numeral 32, the heads of which being received in countersinks formed in the outer faces of the wheel retaining members. The upper and outer faces of theretaining members are rounded and are further provided with Vflanges 33, the latter being adapted to engage the wall and upper face of the adjusting wheel adjacent the circular opening thereof.
The movable jaws 18 have their elongated bodies at all times overlying the circular head and the shank of the device, so it will be noted that when the retaining members engage the adjusting wheel, all of the component parts of the wrench will be effectively sustained in position upon the head of the wrench. The sides or edges of the movable jaws 18 adjacent their depending portions 17 are reduced a suitable distance so as to provide shoulders 34; which are positioned a distance away from the engaging faces 19 Ieojualing one-half of the width of the retaining members and whereby the said jaws, when in their closed position are retained centrally of the said retaining members so that the said jaws when opened will each slide away from each other at an equal rate of speed.
From the above description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be noted that I have provided an eX- tremely simple and effective device for the purpose intended, and while I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiment of the improvement, as it now appears to me, minor details of construction, within the scope of the following claim may be resorted to if desired.
Having thus fully described the invention, what I claim as new is In a. wrench of the class set forth, the combination with a flanged ratchet wheel and spring-pressed dogs for engaging the ratchet wheel, said ratchet wheel being provided with a longitudinally extending depressed portion and a rectangular opening communicating with the said depressed p0rtion, the longitudinal walls provided by the opening being formed with dove-tailed slots having their rear walls curved and inclined from the top of the wheel to the bottom thereof, removable members having dovetailed lower portions for the dove-tailed slots, the inner faces of the said members being reduced above the wall provided by the depression and being longitudinally straight, the edges of the straightened portion having their opposite ends cut away adjacent the dove-tailed portions, the outer face of each of the members being rounded and their upper extremities formed with an offset, sliding jaw members within the opening, said members each being provided with shoulders adapted to engage the walls provided by the cut away portions of the removable members, and a jaw adjusting wheel provided with a central opening adapted to be engaged by the rounded portions of the removable members and to have its upper face contacted by the olsets thereof.
