Description

發光二極體顯示器的混合式驅動器
本發明大體上係關於顯示器,且更特定言之,係關於一種發光二極體(LED)顯示器之混合式驅動器。
當與主動式矩陣液晶顯示器作比較時,主動式矩陣發光二極體顯示器提供許多潛在的優點。一些優點包含但不限於較高的影像品質、薄輪廓、低功耗及低成本。
當前,使用兩種不同方法處理主動式矩陣液晶顯示器;即,電壓程式化與電流程式化。一電壓程式化方法獲益於以一電壓模式程式化操作之顯示驅動器之一大的安裝基礎。然而,電壓程式化的像素電路缺乏補償越過該顯示器之表面之像素TFT(薄膜電晶體)驅動電流之變化之能力,其導致該顯示器中之亮度的非均勻性。一種電流程式化方法可補償越過該顯示器表面之該驅動TFT性能之變化,其導致優於電壓程式化像素之顯示亮度及色彩均勻性。出於此等原因,電流程式化之像素優於電壓程式化之像素。

本發明大體上係在先前技術上改良,且提供不為該先前技術所提供之操作的靈活性以實現主動式矩陣發光二極體顯示器中之均勻色彩與灰階亮度。本發明整合該電流程式化之行驅動器中之電壓預充電電路,且提供新穎及實用方法最優化電流程式化之像素操作以實現該顯示器中之較高的色彩與灰階亮度均勻性。本發明亦提供可程式化、非比例性查找表以建立並界定獨特的及最佳的電壓預充電位準,及藉由包含對在該像素程式化時間之結束處之R、G、B LED像素之驅動需求之不同與電流饋通效果之補償為每一所需像素色彩及亮度位準(像素灰階)提供程式化電流。
因此,需要藉由減少用以為該資料匯流排電容充電所需之時間量提供用以控制該等LED之亮度之驅動器、顯示器及方法。此外,本發明之其他所需的特徵及特性在結合該等附圖與「先前技術」來參考「實施方式」與所附請求項將變得顯而易見。
各種例示性實施例提供一種用於控制一包括一發光二極體(LED)像素行之顯示器之亮度之驅動器,該驅動器包括一被配置為供應一預充電電壓至該LED行之預充電電路及一被配置為施加電流至該LED行之程式化電路。亦包含一被配置為選擇性地耦合該預充電電路或該程式化電路至該LED行之開關。
本發明之例示性實施例亦提供一包括一配置成複數行之LED像素陣列之顯示器。該顯示器亦包括複數個預充電電路,每一預充電電路被配置為基於像素色彩灰階與饋通電流選擇性地供應一預充電電壓至至少一LED像素行;及複數個電流源,每一電流源被配置為選擇性地供應電流至至少一LED像素行。
亦提供用於控制一顯示器之亮度之方法,該顯示器包括複數個LED像素行,其特徵在於:複數個亮度位準。在一例示性實施例中,該方法包括以下步驟:基於一選自該複數個亮度位準之目標亮度位準為該等LED像素行之每一行決定一預充電電壓及供應該等所決定的預充電電壓至該等LED像素行之每一行。

圖1係一先前技術之顯示器100之示意圖,該顯示器100包含被配置成複數行107與複數列109之主動式矩陣發光二極體(AMLED)像素110之一陣列105。該等行107之每一行被耦合至一不同的行驅動器120,且該等列109之每一列被耦合至一不同對的列驅動器130。

開關1106被耦合至該對列驅動器130(見圖1)之一列驅動器138(被耦合至接地),且由該對列驅動器130之一列驅動器138被打開/關閉,且亦被耦合至一節點1118。節點1118被耦合至開關1104、開關1106及一開關1108。開關1108被耦合(經由節點1115)至列驅動器134並由該列驅動器134被打開/關閉,且亦被耦合至節點1112。
AMLED像素110亦包含一LED 1150。LED 1150被耦合至開關1104並被耦合至一電壓源1160之一負端,正端則被耦合至接地。
圖3係一該等行驅動器120(見圖1)之一行驅動器之示意圖。行驅動器120包含一被耦合至一數位類比轉換器(DAC)1220之電壓源1210,該數位類比轉換器1220被配置為轉換數位電壓至類比電壓。DAC 1220亦被耦合至一緩衝器1230,該緩衝器1230被耦合至一電流轉換器1240。電流轉換器1240被配置為從由DAC 1220產生(且被緩衝器1230放大)之該類比電壓信號產生電流。

圖5係行驅動器420之程式化電路430與預充電電路440之一例示性實施例之一示意圖。程式化電路430包括電壓源1210、DAC 1220、緩衝器1230及被配置為類似於前述之行驅動器120(見圖3)之電流轉換器1240。因為此電路之配置與操作早已被討論,所以不再討論。
預充電電路440包括一被耦合至一DAC 4420(例如,一電壓數位類比轉換器(VDAC))之可程式化之預充電電壓源4410,該DAC 4420被配置為轉換數位電壓至類比電壓。 在一實施例中,預充電電壓源4410包括一查找表4412與一記憶體4414。查找表4412被配置為儲存複數個對應於其各自行107中之該等AMLED像素110之每一AMLED像素之亮度位準之電壓。在另一實施例中,查找表4412總體在一單獨的晶片(未顯示)上(亦即,「離板(off-board)」)實施,且與該顯示器之每一行驅動器420通信。在另一實施例中,查找表4412係一下載至(例如,在供電時)該等行驅動器420之每一行驅動器之記憶體4414之總查找表。
如所述,查找表4412包括複數個對應於AMLED像素110之複數個亮度位準之數位電壓數值。舉例而言,AMLED像素110可按256個亮度位準被照亮,且查找表4412儲存個別對應於每一電壓位準之數位電壓。即,對於範圍為位準0至位準255之亮度位準,查找表4412儲存256個對應於該等256個亮度位準之數位電壓數值。在一實施例中,查找表4412儲存從約0伏至約15伏之電壓數值。雖然該實例特定陳述256個位準與一相關的電壓範圍,本發明設想查找表4412可包含隨顯示器400之該所需亮度變化而變化之任一數目之亮度位準與各種電壓範圍。即,本發明設想無窮多個電壓之使用以產生無窮多的色彩及/或亮度位準。
根據一例示性實施例,查找表4412係一非比例性查找表。即,查找表4412除了灰階所需之預充電電壓外還包括電壓數值以補償與AMLED像素110之色彩及電路設計相關之非理想顯示器操作特性(例如,增量電流饋通)。特定言之,當AMLED像素110被程式化至一所需電流時,接著再 被命令以保持模式操作,經由AMLED像素110之電流從其經程式化之電流數值變化一相當於該增量電流饋通之量。於該等電晶體閘與AMLED像素110之電晶體源極與汲極連接之間之寄生電容導致在該等電晶體被啟動與中止時之偏壓轉移。此等偏壓轉移反之產生該等程式化之電流數值之變化。
關於AMLED像素110所產生之色彩,每一色彩係由一具有獨特電性之二極體(例如,二極體1150)產生,因為介電常數對於任一給定之發射器材料可為獨特的。二極體1150之前向電壓亦可為獨特的,且每一二極體1150之該等傳導特性會改變。任何此等特性對AMLED像素110之程式化之不利的影響程度可被辨別,且基於此等因素,藉由查找表4412施加一特殊的補償電壓。特定言之,當該程式化電流與預充電電壓被決定並施加於顯示器400時,查找表4412為灰階、AMLED像素110之電路設計及AMLED像素110之色彩提供補償。
在另一實施例中,該預充電電壓係基於一欲被顯示之影像之相關灰階之複數個被預決定電壓之一者。即,預充電電壓源4410被配置為修改其基於欲被顯示於顯示器400上之每一各自影像之該灰階供應至DAC 4420之預充電電壓量。
在操作期間,顯示時序控制器425命令開關450耦合預充電電路440至資料匯流排235。顯示時序控制器425亦提供視訊資料至預充電電路440。回應該視訊資料,預充電電 路440利用查找表4412以決定用以充電欲被顯示於顯示器400上之該特殊影像之若干電容式元件244所需之電壓量。一旦決定適當的預充電電壓,預充電電壓源4410供應該電壓至DAC 4420,該DAC 4420將該數位電壓轉換至一類比電壓。該類比電壓藉由緩衝器4430被放大,且經由開關450被施加至資料匯流排235上之該等電容式元件244。
一旦該等電容式元件被適當預充電,顯示時序控制器425命令開關450連接資料匯流排235至程式化電路430。程式化電路430與列驅動器134及138接著提供電流至每一AMLED像素110,使得陣列105中之個別像素被照亮具有該(等)適當色彩及/或亮度。
圖6係一種用於控制一顯示器(例如,顯示器400)之亮度之方法600之一例示性實施例之流程圖。方法600由一或多個從一顯示時序控制器(例如,圖4之顯示時序控制器425)接收欲被顯示於顯示器400上之視訊資料之行驅動器(例如,行驅動器420)開始(步驟605)。該視訊資料包含顯示器400之AMLED像素110之至少一行107之該色彩及/或亮度位準。
行驅動器420接著決定該資料匯流排(例如,資料匯流排235)上之該等電容(例如,電容式元件244)所需之預充電電壓(步驟610)。該預充電電壓隨著每一AMLED像素110所需之色彩、增量饋通電流及/或亮度之變化而變化。即,欲被顯示於顯示器400上之該影像(如由該視訊資料之所示)在電流被供應自行驅動器420(經由程式化電路430)之前決定 用以預充電若干電容式元件244所需之電壓量。在一實施例中,行驅動器420將該視訊資料中之每一AMLED像素110之色彩及/或亮度位準匹配至代表一查找表(例如,查找表4412)中之特定色彩及/或亮度位準之對應的電壓。
一旦該預充電電壓被決定,行驅動器420提供從查找表4412所決定之該預充電電壓至資料匯流排235以預充電資料匯流排235上之該等電容式元件244(步驟615)。在該等電容式元件244已被預充電後,行驅動器420結合每對列驅動器130提供電流(例如,經程式化電流)至AMLED像素110之每一行107(步驟620)。
圖7係一顯示本發明之各種實施例之該等優點之至少一者之一實例之曲線圖700。曲線圖700描述一代表利用一習用行驅動器(例如,行驅動器120)之AMLED像素110之程式化時間之曲線702,及一代表利用行驅動器420之各種實施例之AMLED像素110之程式化時間之曲線704。
如所示,利用行驅動器420,AMLED像素110之程式化時間明顯較小。此外,行驅動器420使AMLED像素110能以非常少量之電流被程式化,其允許AMLED像素110具有一較大範圍之色彩及/或一較大數目之亮度位準。

Claims (10)

  1. 一種用於控制一包括一發光二極體(LED)像素行之顯示器之亮度之驅動器,該驅動器裝置包括:一預充電電路,其包括一可程式化電壓源且被配置為供應一預充電電壓至該LED像素行,該可程式化電壓源經配置以施加一第一預充電電壓至該行及施加一第二預充電電壓至該行;一程式化電路,其被配置為供應電流至該LED像素行;及一開關,其被配置為選擇性地耦合該預充電電路與該程式化電路之一者至該LED像素行。
  2. 如請求項1之驅動器,其中該預充電電路包括:一非比例性查找表,其包括複數個代表每一LED像素之複數個亮度位準之電壓數值;及該可程式化電壓源,其被耦合至該非比例性查找表。
  3. 如請求項2之驅動器,其中該可程式化之電壓源被配置為基於獲自該非比例性查找表之一第一電壓數值供應一第一預充電電壓至一行。
  4. 如請求項2之驅動器,其中該預充電電路進一步包括一被耦合至該可程式化之電壓源之數位類比轉換器(DAC),該DAC被配置為接收來自該可程式化之電壓源之該預充電電壓。
  5. 如請求項1之驅動器,進一步包括一非比例性查找表,該查找表包括複數個代表被耦合至該預充電電路之每一 LED之複數個亮度位準之電壓數值。
  6. 一種顯示器,其包括:一被配置成複數行之發光二極體(LED)像素陣列;複數個預充電電路,每一預充電電路被配置為選擇性地供應一預充電電壓至至少一LED像素行且每一預充電電路包括一可程式化電壓源,其經配置以施加一第一預充電電壓至一行及施加一第二預充電電壓至該行;及複數個電流源,每一電流源被配置為選擇性地供應電流至至少一LED像素行。
  7. 如請求項6之顯示器,進一步包括複數個選擇性耦合該等預充電電路之每一預充電電路與該等電流源之每一電流源之一者至該等LED行之每一行之開關。
  8. 如請求項6之顯示器,其中該複數個預充電電路之每一預充電電路包括:一查找表,其包括複數個代表每一LED之複數個亮度位準之電壓數值;及一可程式化電壓源,其被耦合至該查找表。
  9. 如請求項6之顯示器,進一步包括一查找表,其包括複數個代表被耦合至該複數個預充電電路之每一預充電電路之每一LED之複數個亮度位準之電壓數值。
  10. 一種用於控制一顯示器之亮度之方法,該顯示器包括複數個發光二極體(LED)像素行,其具有複數個亮度位準,該方法包括以下步驟:基於一選自該複數個亮度位準之目標亮度位準決定該 等LED像素行之每一行之一第一預充電電壓及一第二預充電電壓;及供應該所決定之該第一預充電電壓至該等LED像素行之一行及供應該所決定之該第二預充電電壓至該行。
