技术领域
本发明通常涉及显示器,更具体地涉及用于发光二极管(LED)显示器的混合驱动器。
背景技术
与有源矩阵液晶显示器相比,有源矩阵发光二极管显示器提供了许多潜在优势。一些优势包括但不限于更优的图像质量、薄的轮廓、低的功率损耗,以及更低的成本。
当前,两种不同的方法被用于寻址有源矩阵液晶显示器;即,电压编程和电流编程。电压编程方法得益于在电压编程模式下操作的显示器驱动器的大安装基底。然而,电压编程像素电路不能补偿跨过显示器表面的像素TFT驱动电流的变化,其导致显示器辉度(luminance)不均匀。电流编程方法可以补偿跨过显示器表面的驱动TFT性能的变化,其导致比电压编程像素更好的显示器辉度和颜色均匀性。出于这些原因,电流编程像素比电压编程像素优选。

本发明大体上在现有技术基础上进行改进,并提供了现有技术未提供的运行灵活性,以用于在有源矩阵发光二极管显示器中获得均匀颜色和灰度级辉度。本发明在电流编程列驱动器中集成了电压预充电电路,并且提供了新颖和实用的装置以最优化电流编程像素操作,从而在显示器中获得更好的颜色和灰度级辉度均匀性。本发明也提供了可编程的、非比例(non-proportional)查找表(lookuptable),通过包括用于R、G、B的LED像素驱动需求中差别的补偿、以及像素编程时间结束时的电流馈通效应,来建立并定义唯一的和最优的电压预充电电平、以及每一期望像素颜色和辉度级(像素灰度级)的编程电流。
相应地,期望通过减少充电数据总线电容的所需时间量来提供控制显示器中LED辉度的驱动器、显示器和方法。而且,本发明的其它期望特性和特征将结合附图和本发明的背景技术、根据随后的本发明详细描述以及附加的权利要求书而变得显而易见。
发明内容
不同的典型实施例提供了用于控制包括一列发光二极管(LED)像素的显示器辉度的驱动器。该驱动器包括配置成供给预充电电压到该列LED的预充电电路和配置成施加电流到该列LED的编程电路。也包括配置成有选择地耦合预充电电路或编程电路到该列LED的开关。
本发明的典型实施例也提供了包括以多个列布置的LED像素阵列的显示器。该显示器也包括多个预充电电路,每一个配置成有选择地供给基于像素颜色灰度级和馈通电流的预充电电压到至少一列LED像素,以及多个电流源,每一个配置成有选择地供给电流到至少一列LED像素。
控制包括多列LED像素的显示器辉度的方法,特征在于多个辉度级也被提供。在一个典型实施例中,该方法包括基于从多个辉度级中选择的目标辉度级确定每一列LED像素的预充电电压、并将所确定的预充电电压供给每一列LED像素。

图1为现有技术显示器100的原理图,显示器包括在多个列107和行109上布置的有源矩阵发光二极管(AMLED)像素110的阵列105。每一列107耦合到不同的列驱动器120,并且每一行109耦合到不同对的行驱动器130。
如图2中所示,其为显示器100的一部分200的更详细的原理图,每一列驱动器120耦合到配置成传送视频数据到列驱动器120的显示器时序控制器(timing controller)225。而且,每一列驱动器120和每一对行驱动器130相互协同运行,以提供电流到每一AMLED像素110并从而照亮每一AMLED像素110。一个周期中一次照亮行109中的一行,并且在连续周期之间插入每一AMLED像素断开的一段时间(例如消隐期(blanking period))。

开关1106,耦合到成对的行驱动器130(参见图1)的行驱动器138(耦合到地),并由其接通/断开,并且还耦合到节点1118。节点1118耦合到开关1104、开关1106和开关1108。开关1108(经由节点1115),耦合到行驱动器134,并由其接通/断开,并且也耦合到节点1112。
AMLED像素110还包括LED1150。LED1150耦合到开关1104并且耦合到电压源1160的负端,正端耦合到地。
图3为列驱动器120(参见图1)之一的原理图。列驱动器120包括耦合到数字-模拟转换器(DAC)1220(其配置为将数字电压转换到模拟电压)的电压源1210。DAC1220还耦合到缓冲器1230,其耦合到电流转换器1240。电流转换器1240配置成从由DAC1220产出的模拟电压信号(并由缓冲器1230放大)产生电流。

列驱动器420包括编程电路430和预充电电路440,其每一个经由开关450有选择地耦合到AMLED像素110。编程电路430配置成连同每一相应行109的成对行驱动器130一起提供电流到AMLED像素110(经由开关450)。预充电电路440配置成提供预充电电压(经由开关450)到数据总线235,以先于编程电路430和行驱动器134和138提供电流到AMLED像素110之前对每一电容器244预充电。
图5为列驱动器420的编程电路430和预充电电路440的一个典型实施例的原理图。编程电路430包括电压源1210、DAC1220、缓冲器1230、以及电流转换器1240,其配置类似于前面所讨论的列驱动器120(参见图3)。因为该电路的配置和运行已经讨论过,将不再赘述。
预充电电路440包括耦合到DAC4420(例如电压数字-模拟转换器(VDAC))(其配置成将数字电压转换成模拟电压)的可编程预充电电压源4410。在一个实施例中,预充电电压源4410包括查找表4412和存储器4414。查找表4412配置成储存对应于在其相应列107中的每一AMLED像素110的多个辉度级的多个电压。在另一个实施例中,查找表4412在单独芯片(未示出)上全局地(globally)(即“板外”(off-board))实施,并且与显示器的每一列驱动器420通信。在又一个实施例中,查找表4412是下载(例如加电时)到每一列驱动器420的存储器4414中的全局查找表。
如所指出的,查找表4412包括对应于AMLED像素110的多个亮度级的多个数字电压值。例如,AMLED像素110能够以256个亮度级照亮,并且查找表4412储存对应于每个电压电平的单独数字电压。即,对于从0级到255级范围内的亮度级,查找表4412储存对应于这256个亮度级的256个数字电压值。在一个实施例中,查找表4412储存从大约0伏到大约15伏的电压值。尽管示例特定地叙述了256级以及相关的电压范围,然而本发明中,查找表4412可以包括取决于显示器400的所期望亮度(辉度)而变化的任意数量的亮度级和不同电压范围。即,本发明包含了使用无穷数量的电压以产出无穷数量的颜色和/或亮度级。
根据一个典型实施例,查找表4412为非比例查找表。即,不仅包括灰度级所需预充电电压,查找表4412包括电压值以补偿与AMLED像素110的颜色和电路设计有关的非理想显示器运行特性(例如,δ电流馈通(delta current feedthrough))。具体地,当AMLED像素110编程为期望电流,并且随后被命令以保持模式(hold mode)运行,通过AMLED像素110的电流从其编程电流值改变等于δ电流馈通的量。AMLED像素110的晶体管栅极和晶体管源极及漏极连接之间的寄生电容在该晶体管启动(enable)和截止(disable)时导致偏置电压偏移。这些电压偏移,依次地,产生编程电流值的变化。
关于AMLED像素110所产生的颜色,每一颜色由具有唯一电性质的二极管(例如二极管1150)产生,因为介电常数对于任意给定的发射材料(emittermaterial)来说是唯一的。二极管1150的前向电压也可以是唯一的,每一二极管1150的导电性质会变化。任何这些性质不利地影响AMLED像素110编程的程度可以被描绘出来,以及基于这些因素由查找表4412所施加的特定补偿电压。特别地,当编程电流和预充电电压被确定并施加到显示器400时,查找表4412提供AMLED像素110的颜色、AMLED像素110的电路设计以及灰度级的补偿。
在另一个实施例中,预充电电压是基于将被显示的图像的相关灰度级的多个预定电压之一。即,预充电电压源4410配置成基于将在显示器400上显示的每一相应图像的灰度级,修改其供给到DAC4420的预充电电压量。
在运行期间,显示器时序控制器425命令开关450将预充电电路440耦合到数据总线235。显示器时序控制器425也提供视频数据到预充电电路440。响应于视频数据,预充电电路440利用查找表4412以确定对于将在显示器400上显示的特定图像充电电容性元件所需的电压量。一旦确定了适当的预充电电压,预充电电压源4410供给该电压到DAC4420,其将数字电压转换成模拟电压。模拟电压被缓冲器4430放大并经由开关450施加到数据总线235上的电容性元件244。
一旦电容性元件被适当地预充电,显示器时序控制器425命令开关450将数据总线235连接到编程电路430。编程电路430和行驱动器134和138随后提供电流到每一AMLED像素110,使得阵列105中的单独像素用适当的颜色和/或亮度照亮。
图6为控制显示器(例如显示器400)辉度的方法600的一个典型实施例的流程图。方法600从一个或多个列驱动器(例如列驱动器420)从显示器时序控制器(例如图4中的显示器时序控制器425)接收将在显示器400上显示的视频数据而开始(步骤605)。视频数据包括显示器400的AMLED像素110的至少一列107的颜色和/或亮度级。
列驱动器420随后确定数据总线(例如数据总线235)上电容(例如电容性元件244)所需预充电电压(步骤610)。预充电电压取决于每一AMLED像素110所需的颜色、δ馈通电流(delta feed-through current)和/或亮度而变化。即,将在显示器400上显示的图像(由视频数据所指示的)确定在电流(经由编程电路430)从列驱动器420供给之前预充电电容性元件244所需电压量。在一个实施例中,列驱动器420将视频数据中每一AMLED像素110的颜色和/或亮度级匹配于表现查找表(例如查找表4412)中特定颜色和/或亮度级的对应电压。
一旦确定了预充电电压,列驱动器420将从查找表4412确定的预充电电压提供到数据总线235,以预充电数据总线235上的电容性元件244(步骤615)。在已预充电电容性元件244之后,列驱动器420结合每一对行驱动器130提供电流(例如编程电流)到AMLED像素110的每一列107(步骤620)。
图7为阐述本发明多个实施例的至少一个优势示例的曲线图700。曲线图700描述了表现利用传统列驱动器(例如列驱动器120)AMLED像素110的编程时间的曲线702,以及表现利用列驱动器420的不同实施例AMLED像素110的编程时间的曲线704。
如所阐述的,利用列驱动器420,AMLED像素110的编程时间极少。而且,列驱动器420能够用非常少量的电流使AMLED像素110被编程,这允许AMLED像素110具有更大范围的颜色和/或更大数量的辉度级。
尽管在前面的本发明详细描述中已经提出了至少一个典型实施例,应当理解,存在大量的变体。也应当理解,一个或更多个典型实施例仅仅是示例性的,而并不试图以任何方式限定本发明的范围、使用范围或配置。相反,前述详细描述对所属领域技术人员来说提供了实施本发明典型实施例的便利的路线图。应当理解,可以对典型实施例中所描述的元件的功能和布置作出各种改变,只要不背离所附权利要求书所阐述的本发明的范围。

Claims (10)

1、一种用于控制包括发光二极管(LED)像素列的显示器辉度的驱动器,该装置包括:
预充电电路,配置成供给预充电电压到该LED像素列;
编程电路,配置成供给电流到该LED像素列;以及
开关,配置成有选择地将预充电电路和编程电路之一耦合到该LED像素列。
2、根据权利要求1的驱动器,其中,预充电电路包括:
非比例查找表,其包括表示每一LED像素的多个辉度级的多个电压值;以及
可编程电压源,其耦合到非比例查找表。
3、根据权利要求2的驱动器,其中,可编程电压源配置成基于从非比例查找表获得的第一电压值而将第一预充电电压供给到列。
4、根据权利要求2的驱动器,其中,预充电电路进一步包括耦合到可编程电压源的数字-模拟转换器(DAC),该DAC配置成从可编程电压源接收预充电电压。
5、根据权利要求1的驱动器,进一步包括非比例查找表,其包括表示耦合到预充电电路的每一LED的多个辉度级的多个电压值。
6、一种显示器,包括:
以多个列布置的发光二极管(LED)像素的阵列;
多个预充电电路,每一个配置成有选择地供给预充电电压到LED像素的至少一列;以及
多个电流源,每一个配置成有选择地供给电流到LED像素的至少一列。
7、根据权利要求6的显示器,进一步包括多个开关,其有选择地将每一预充电电路和每一电流源之一耦合到每一LED列。
8、根据权利要求6的显示器,其中,多个预充电电路的每一个包括:
查找表,其包括表示每一LED的多个辉度级的多个电压值;以及
可编程电压源,其耦合到查找表。
9、根据权利要求6的显示器,进一步包括查找表,其包括表示耦合到多个预充电电路中的每一个的每一LED的多个辉度级的多个电压值。
10、一种控制包括以多个辉度级为特征的多个发光二极管(LED)像素列的显示器辉度的方法,该方法包括以下步骤:
基于从多个辉度级中所选择的目标辉度级,来确定每一LED像素列的预充电电压;以及
供给所确定预充电电压到每一LED像素列。
