Abstract

A process of producing super fine magnesium oxide powder by sol-gel technology, which comprises the following steps: (a) reacting the magnesium metal with methyl alcohol at 64 deg.C to synthesize magnesium-methanolate in which the molar ratio between the magnesium metal and the methyl alcohol is 1:2.4 to 1:3.0; (b) placing the magnesium-methanolate in a water-methyl alcohol solution in which the volume percentage concentration of methyl alcohol is 10% to 15% and the molar ratio between the magnesium-methanolate and the water-methyl alcohol solution is 1:90 to 1:110 while the reaction takes at room temperature for 1 to 2 hours; (c) adding 2.0 to 3.0 cc/l of ammonia water into the hydrolyzed product to undergo sol-gel reaction at 80 deg.C for 1 to 2 hours and placing the reaction mixture at room temperature to obtain clear sol-gel; (d) freezing the sol-gel in liquid nitrogen and removing moisture by drying to obtain the super fine magnesium oxide powder.
