Изобретение относитс  к металлургии, к способам тепловой обработки легковесной шихты, преимущественно стальной стружки, перед загрузкой в плавильные электропечи или в установки гор чего бри- кетировани . Известен способ тепловой обработки шихты перед загрузкой в плавильную элект печь, включающий нагрев ее в футерованно резервуаре до температуры 6ОО-8ОО С. Однако при таком способе воспламен ютс  масла на поверхности шихты, что приводит к резкому повышению температуры шихты и значительному угару металла. Цель изобретени  - предотвращение воспламенени  масел на поверхности шихты и уменьшение угара металла. Достигаетс  это за счет того, что по предлагаемому способу режим нагрева осуществл етс  в три стадии: нагрев до 25О-40О°С (ниже температуры воспламенени  масел), выдержка при этой температуре до прекращени  дымообразовани  и удалени  значительной части масел с поверхности шихты и подогрев до требуемой температуры (6OO-800 t). В период выдержки при температурах 250-400°С уда-; л етс  значительна  часть масел без их воспламенени , в результате чего при дальнейшем нагреве легковесной шихты до высоких температур (60О-8ОО°С) воспламенени  масел также не происходит.
