V súčasnosti sa vo veľkej miere používajú spaľovacie motory, ktoré majú piesty spojené cez ojnice s kľukovým hriadeľom. Energia výbuchu sa pomocou piesta, ktorý vykonáva posuvný vratný pohyb, prenáša cez ojnicu na kľukový hriadeľ, ktorý vykonáva rotačný pohyb. Pri takomto type motora vzniká množstvo energetických strát, ktoré sú zapríčinené trením rovnako posuvných častí a tiež rotačných častí. Na zníženie trenia je používané značné množstvo oleja. Keďže tento typ motora obsahuje kľukový hriadeľ, ktorý má nevyvážené hmoty, potrebuje komplikovanú konštrukciu, aby sa eliminovali vzniknuté vibrácie.
