Abstract

A method for treating a cold-processed metal product having a thin (hydr)oxide layer (1) on its surface, comprises heating the product in an oxidising atmosphere inside an oven until it glows red hot and then treating the product to remove scale formed on the product surfaces in the oven.Before the product is heated in the oven it is pre-treated in an aqueous acid solution containing free protons that completely remove the (hydr)oxide layer by means of a reduction reaction to enable the metal beneath this layer to be oxidised and form a new surface layer (2) comprising the reaction products of the acid solution components with the metal and optional unreacted components in the metal. The conditioned metal product is then heated in the oven. Preferably a stainless steel metal product is pre-treated in sulphuric acid, hydrochloric acid or hydrofluoric acid.
