Abstract

A freight space structure 1 for a railway wagon or other vehicle has a fixed floor 3, end walls 15, and hinged, sectional side walls 2. One side of each side wall panel is smooth; when these sides face inwards, the structure may be used as a bulk carrier (fig. 2), e.g. for scrap steel 7. The other side of each side wall panel has troughs suitable for location of steel coils 5 (fig. 1), or rods 6, profiles, or pipes. The structure is converted from bulk to coil carrier by folding down the side walls, possibly using hydraulic or pneumatic cylinders. The trough surfaces may be protected by a resilient surface layer of wood or plastic - particularly polyurethane. The structure may be removeable from the wagon base, and may have horizontal dimensions corresponding to a standard container size. Conversely, the structure may constitute a structural part of the wagon. The structure is designed for strength, but also to avoid contamination of the coil carrying area to maintain good surface quality after transport. <IMAGE>
