Abstract

In a multicylinder internal combustion engine, especially for driving a motor vehicle, an additional exhaust valve for each cylinder controls a throttle line between the cylinder chamber and an exhaust port in such a way that during braking operation of the internal combustion engine air is expelled from the cylinder chamber into the exhaust port performing throttling work. In order to prevent air being pumped from cylinder to cylinder, a non-return valve opening towards the exhaust port is arranged in each throttle line, which valve keeps the throttle line closed when the pressure in the exhaust port is higher than the pressure in the cylinder chamber.
