Abstract

The invention is a procedure for extracting metal values from zinciferous crude lead through oxidizing smelting and reduction of the formed smelt. Smelting is carried out in an oven with the addition of slag former to create a slag that is viscous at the selected reduction temperature and low lead content. Reduction is carried out with the addition of solid, carboniferous reduction agent, such as coke, to the slag. The reduction agent is caused to form a suspension with the slag, which occurs during the later phase of the reduction period when the lead content of the slag has fallen to below approx. 1-2 percent, during which phase zinc reduction occurs. Zinc is removed from the oven as zinc vapour and lead and any other metal values of the raw material as a crude lead smelt.
