Abstract

The locking hook 13 has first and second pivotal connection points 21, 25 which are arranged one on either side of the pivot 14, and the unlocking member 17, 17a is connected, or connectable, to a selected one of the first and second pivotal connection points 21, 25. This enables the unlocking member to project either to the one side, or to the opposite side of a towing vehicle on which the fifth wheel coupling is provided. Accordingly, the fifth wheel coupling can be readily adapted for use by vehicles travelling normally on the right, or left hand side of a road. In addition, preferably the pivots 2 and 14 are spaced by the same distance laterally from the longitudinal axis 8 of the vehicle, so that the positions of the coupling claw 3 and locking hook 13 can be interchanged. By virtue of interchanging of the position of the locking hook 13, this provides two further alternative positions for the unlocking member 17, 17a. <IMAGE>
