Abstract

An arrangement for modifying the dynamic range of an input signal has two series connected bi-linear stages with at least one cross connection feeding a signal component from one stage to the other stage to modify the action of the latter. In one embodiment a compressor has two bilinear stages 280 and 282, each with a linear main circuit path including an adding circuit (+) and a further path N1, N2 with non-linear characteristics providing a limited signal to the corresponding adding circuit, and a coupling circuit with transfer characteristic f(s) is connected to the output of the first further path N1 and injects a signal into the second further path N2 in order to improve such factors as reduction in noise modulation. A complementary arrangement applies to the expander 284, 286. In an alternative arrangement, the coupling circuit is a common control circuit for the series- connected compressor or expander stages, which reduces circuit complexity. <IMAGE>
