Abstract

The quantity of a substance in a specimen is determined in the presence of a contaminant by using a first beam of radiation within an absorption band of the contaminant and a second beam of radiation within both an absorption band of the contaminant and an absorption band of the substance, the respective intensifies of the beams after incidence upon the specimen being detected and converted into electrical signals, functions of which are subtracted to indicate directly the quantity of the substance in the specimen. The beams may be transmitted through a paper sheet 40 with the aid of diffuse reflectors 41, 43, to determine the water content despite carbon contaminant particles 46 (e.g. from recycled pulp), suitable wavelengths being 1.8 mu and 1.94 mu . Reflection may also be used. Appropriate equations for determining the water content are given. <IMAGE>
