Abstract
The plant comprises a combustion chamber 3, which may be a fluidised bed combustion chamber, an air compressor 1 having its outlet side connected to the chamber 3 by a pipe 5, and a pipe 6 for conveying combustion products from the chamber 3 to the inlet side of a gas turbine 2. For the purpose of stopping the turbine rapidly, in the event of a sudden loss of load or damage to the plant, valves 7 and 8 are provided in the pipes 5 and 6, respectively, and a third valve 9 is provided between the pipes 5 and 6. Normally the valves 7, 8 are open and the valve 9 shut, but when it is required to stop the turbine, the valve 9 is opened and the valves 7, 8 are closed. This has the effect of by- passing the combustion chamber 3 so that cool air flows from the compressor 1 directly to the turbine 2. The load of the compressor rapidly slows down the turbine. <IMAGE>
