Abstract

1497239 Self-tapping screws TEXTRON Inc 5 May 1976 [8 May 1975] 18465/76 Heading B3N [Also in Division F2] A self-tapping fastener comprises: a metal screw 11 having a tool-engageable head 13, an integral washer 19 with a scalloped periphery, a shoulder 22 and a threaded shank 15; and a plastics head 12 encapsulating the head 13 and washer 19 and including a tool-engaging portion and a washer portion 25 which extends around and beyond the washer 19 and through spaces 23 between adjacent scallops 21 to transmit torque between the screw 11 and the head 12. As shown the head 12 has radially-projecting ribs 26 for engatement by a driving tool, and the ribs may taper axially or circumferentially (Figs. 3 to 7, not shown). As in Figs. 15-18 (not shown) the ribs may shear at a predetermined torque to prevent unauthorized removal of the fastener. To remove the fastener the plastics head 13 is stripped off and a tool is applied to the head 13 which has a tool-engageable configuration, e.g. hexagonal as shown. The head 12 may be made of 30% glass filled nylon base material.
