Abstract
1437649 Cell having anode material as suspension in electrolyte BATTELLE MEMORIAL INSTITUTE 26 June 1974 [28 June 1973] 28415/74 Heading H1B A cell 1 has an inlet 2 and outlet 3 for circulation of particulate zinc and/or aluminium anode material as a suspension in a KOH electrolyte, a pump 5 driving a proportion of the slurry in a closed circuit 4 including a filter 6. The cell cathode may comprise a metal oxide electrode but, as shown, comprises an air electrode. To increase the precipitation of zinc oxide (or aluminium oxide) from the spent fuel and thereby maintain the ion concentration below a certain level of saturation to improve the cell efficiency a proportion of the slurry flows through a circuit 7 including a tank 8 having electric heating means 9 and a filter 10. The tank 8 is heated to 80‹ C. and the precipitated ZnO is retained in filter 10. The electric heater 9 may be replaced or augmented by an ultrasonic-wave generator (Fig. 2, not shown).
