Abstract

1447614 Electrolytic hydrogen-oxygen production A H BLUE and R D WOOD 3 Sept 1973 [2 June 1972] 56042/71 Heading C7B [Also in Division B7] A motor vehicle powered by a hydrogen burning engine has an electrolytic cell for producing H 2 + O 2 by water electrolysis, a storage battery for supplying electric power to effect said electrolysis, and means for collecting hydrogen produced in the cell and supplying it to the engine for combustion. A generator for recharging the cell may be provided. The cell in Fig. 1 has a glass or plastics container 2 with Al electrodes 3 connected as alternating anodes and cathodes, has a heater 16 and uses water containing NaOH or H 2 SO 4 as electrolyte. The H 2 may be dried by CaCl 2 and pumped to a storage tank with a pressure meter and safety valve. Air for drying and use as a combustion aid may be introduced. In an alternative embodiment the anode is a cone or rod disposed in a conical recess in the cathode. One electrode in this case may be compressed Zn/Cu and the other compressed Fe.
