En intermittent och kan arbeta eller elektriskt genomsnittliga förbrukning av elektrisk effekt kan vara av sådan pump 30 kontinuerligt vara driven, varvid dess storleksordningen 2-10 watt Genom att en viss diffusion således tillåts genom mantlarna 20 och 22, kan dessa, jämfört med helt diffusionstäta mantlar, göras så mycket billigare, att kostnaden för vakuumpumpen 30 och dess drift uppvägs.
Respektive mantel 20 och 22 kan utgöras av ett laminat av olika plaster, så att en tillfredsställande balans mellan mekanisk styrka, diffusionshindrande förmåga och formbarhet vid exempelvis vakuumformning erhålls.
Den yttre manteln 22, hos vilken diffusionsbenägenheten är som störst eftersom den är den varmaste manteln, kan bestå av ett enda, 2 mm tjockt skikt av mineralfylld PE (polyetylen), som har en kombination av god mekanisk styrka, goda barriäregenskaper mot diffusion och god formbarhet.
Den inre manteln 20 kan bestå av ett inre, 1,7 m tjockt skikt 34 av PS medelst ett mellanliggande vidhäftningsskikt med ett yttre, 0,3 m tjockt skikt 36 av PE.
Genom beläggning av mantlarna med aluminiumfolie, en (polystyren) laminerat barriärplastfilm eller en diffusionshindrande lack, kan diffusionen in i utrymmet 28 nedbringas vid behov. Ãndpartierna 24 och 26 har en ändyta 38, som befinner sig i samma plan som ytterytan 40 hos yttermanteln 22. Under 26 är en ränna 42 utformad i yttermantelns 22 ändparti yttermanteln.
