A reservoir of cigarettes 5 is formed between, and fed and discharged by, vertically extending endless suction belts 3, 4 arranged on opposite sides of a plate 3 and driven in opposite directions. The plate may be vertically movable to vary the capacity of the reservoir and may be replaced by an endless belt, the direction of movement of which is used to control the distribution of cigarettes in the reservoir. In a further embodiment Fig. 2 (not shown) the reservoir is formed of two inclined endless belts (1), (4), the angle of inclination being variable to adjust the capacity of the reservoir. The feed conveyer (1) may be replaced by a fixed plate Fig. 3 (not shown). In a still further embodiment Fig. 4 (not shown) the reservoir is formed between a horizontal endless feed belt (1) and a vertical discharge belt (4).
