Abstract

1,118,414. Grinding. CARBORUNDUM CO. 13 July, 1966 [22 July, 1965], No. 31475/66. Heading B3D. A machine for grinding surfaces of steel slabs or billets comprises means for mounting a grinding wheel for rotary movement about an axis, means for supporting the wheel mounting for bodily movement of the wheel about a supporting axis spaced above the grinding wheel, and means for driving the wheel. The machine has a body 2 supported on wheels 4 for movement along rails 6, the wheels on one side being driven by a chain drive from a hydraulic motor. The ends of the body are formed with upstanding walls 8, 10, Fig. 3, supporting rails 12 which extend across the body and project therefrom in cantilever fashion. The rails are provided with track members 24 which are engaged by rollers 28 on a carriage 26 which bridge the walls and is movable along the rails by a hydraulic motor. Side members 32 depend from the carriage between the walls 8, 10 and have further rollers 36 engaging track members 34 formed on the inner surfaces of the walls. A shaft extends between bearings 50 on the side members 32 of the carriage and supports a boom 44 having side plate 46 adjacent the side members 32. The boom is pivotally movable about the axis of the shaft by hydraulic devices 51 and is formed with a shelf 54, Fig. 5, supporting a drive motor 52 coupled to a gear-box 56, the output shaft 62 of which carries a pulley 64 connected by belts 66 to a pulley 68 for driving the grinding wheel. The pulley 68 is on a shaft 70, Fig. 8, connected by gearing 78 to the spindle 76 carrying the grinding wheel, the spindle being located in bearings in a housing 80 formed with a flange 100 slidably received within ribs 102 on the back wall 98 of a guard 96; the flange and back wall can be clamped in adjusted positions by bolts 106 extending through vertical slots in the flange. The guard 96 is carried by a pair of arms 108 from a shaft 112 which is mounted in a housing 114 on the end of the boom and is coaxial with the pulley 66 on the gear-box 56. A cover-plate 116 for the guard is also supported by arms 118 mounted on the shaft 112 and can be secured to the guard by eye-bolts 120. Release of the bolts 120 and swinging of the cover about the shaft 112 provides easy access to the grinding wheel for purposes of replacement. The assembly of housing 80 including the spindle 20 and pulley 68 and the guard 96 are adjustable about the axis of shaft 112 by a double-acting hydraulic cylinder 124, Fig. 3, disposed between the housings 80, 114. In another embodiment, the plane of the grinding wheel is at 45 degrees to the longitudinal axis of the boom, the wheel 92, Fig. 10, being carried by a flange 87 on a spindle 73 connected by gearing 75 to a spindle 71 corresponding to the spindle 70 of the first embodiment. The wheel is enclosed by a guard mounted for movement about the shaft 112. In a further embodiment, in which the plane face of a grinding wheel 138, Fig. 17, is used, the grinding wheel is carried by a shaft which is disposed in a housing 146 and connected by gearing to a shaft 154 coupled to the shaft 62 of the gear-box 56 and supported by bearings 166, 168 in the housing 114 on the end of the boom. The housing 146 is adjustable about the axis of the shaft 154 by a hydraulic cylinder. Spare grinding wheels may be stored in a channel 134 in the body 2 which is formed with a shelf 136 on which a replacement wheel can be supported, the shelf being adjacent the position of the spindle of the grinding wheel when the boom is fully retracted and lowered.
