Abstract

743,645. Grinding. MID-WEST ABRASIVE CO. Nov. 27, 1951 [Dec. 4, 1950], No. 27809/51. Class 60 A heavy duty machine for grinding metal billets of substantial length comprises a grinding wheel 41 carried by a boom 38 supported by a frame structure 37 mounted on a carriage 23 movable along a predetermined path of travel. The carriage 23 has axles 27 to which are secured wheels 28 running on tracks 24 adjacent the support 21 for the work piece 22. One of the axles 27 is driven through chain and sprocket gearing 31, 32, 33 by a fluid motor 29 mounted on the platform 26 of the carriage 23, the motor being controlled by a pedaloperated valve 35. A tubular housing 44 mounted on the frame structure 37 telescopically receives the inner end of the boom 38 which is slidably supported by means of anti-friction devices 45 at the ends of the housing Sleeves 46 secured on the opposite ends of the housing 44 have annular recesses 47 receiving carriers 48 secured to the sleeves by pins 49; each antifriction device 45 includes four pairs of rollers 53 supported on the carrier 48 to engage the flat sides of the boom 38. The boom 38 is moved in opposite directions axially of the tubular housing 44 by a fluid motor 64 comprising a cylinder 65, carried by the housing 44, and a piston 66 therein connected by rod' 68 to a yoke 39 on the boom 38; the motor 64 is controlled by a manually-operated valve 70 mounted on the control panel 71a. The grinding wheel 41 is belt driven from an electric motor 71 secured to a plate 72 mounted by rollers 74 on tracks 73 on the frame structure 37. The plate 72 is connected to the yoke 39 of the boom 38 by a rod 76. One end of the rod 76 is connected by a universal joint 78 to an.arm 77 fixed to the plate 72; the other end of the rod 76 is connected to the yoke 39 by a coupling 78a, adjustment of which tensions the driving belt for the grinding wheel, and universal joint 82. The tubular housing 44 is rotatably supported adjacent opposite ends in blocks 54, 55 and is rotated in these blocks by a fluid motor. 100 comprising a cylinder 101, pivoted at 103 to the frame structure 37, and a piston 102 therein connected by rod 104 to arms 105 projecting from the housing 44: the motor 100 is controlled by a manually-operated valve 107 mounted on the control panel 71a. The block 54 is supported between uprights 56, a pair of axially aligned trunnions 57 projecting outwardly from opposite sides of the block 54 being journalled in the uprights 56 to enable swinging movement of the housing 44 about the axis of the trunnions; the block 54 has wear plates 59. The block 55, also provided with wear plates 62, is supported between uprights 60. The housing 44, together with the boom 38, is swung vertically about the axis of the trunnions 57 by a fluid motor 90 comprising a cylinder 91, pivoted at 93 to the carriage 23 and a piston 92 therein connected by rod 94 tu the block 55: the motor 90 is controlled by a manually-operated. valve 97 mounted on the control panel 71a. A seat 108 for the operator is provided on the carriage 23 adjacent the control panel 71a. The hydraulic syste mcomprises a reservoir 114, supported on the carriage 23 beneath the tracks 73, and three pumps 110, 111, 112 driven by an electric motor 113 supported on the carriage 23; the pumps 110, 111 are of the rotary blade type and are provided with relief valves 116. 119; the pump 112 is a gear pump and is-provided with a relief valve 126. A speed control valve 117 of the by-pass type is provided between, the'pump 110 and valve 35; a metering valve 131 is provided between the valve 97 and the reservoir 114. Load valves 130, 130 are associated with the fluid motor 29. A check valve 121 and flow regulatcr 122 are provided between valve 97 and one end of motor 90.
