Abstract
1,118,710. Rotary regenerative heat exchangers. SVENSKA ROTOR MASKINER A.B. 28 Nov., 1966 [29 Nov., 1965], No. 50526/65. Heading F4K. In a rotary regenerative heat exchanger having a cylindrical rotor 10 containing a regenerative mass and movable within a stationary housing 14 having ducts for the passage of heat exchange fluids, sealing means between the ducts comprises sector plates 20, 22 hinged at their radially inner ends to the stationary housing, and an axial seal 52, the sector plates and axial seal being linked together such that movement of one seal due to thermal distortion of the rotor results in corresponding movement of the others. Links 50 are pivotally attached to the axial seal 52 and to yokes 48 rigidly attached to tubes 46 slidable along rods 44 attached to the sector plates. Lever members 58 are rigidly attached to each link 50 and are pivotally and slidably interconnected by a pin 60 in a slot 62, the lever members transmitting motion from the axial seal 52 to the sector plates 20, 22 and vice versa. A rod 24 attached to the lower sector plate 22 carries a stop (not shown) beneath the upper sector plate 20, which stop defines the minimum separation of the sector plates, and is attached through an adjustable suspension link 36 to one end of a lever 32 pivotally fixed to a link 30 which is pivoted to the housing end wall 28, the other end of the lever being biased by a counterweight 34 or by a spring (not shown) counterbalancing the weight of the sector plates, the axial seal and the linkages. The positions of the yokes 48 and hence of the axial seal 52 are adjustable by means of nuts engaging the outer ends of the rods 44 and a screwthread on the tubes 46. The tubes 46 and rods 44 pass through holes in the housing 14 sealed by bellows-like members 56. In operation, separation of the sector plates 20, 22 due to deformation of the rotor, is transmitted through the rod 24 and links 50 to cause outwardly radial motion of the axial seal 52 in order to decrease frictional contact between the sealing surfaces and the rotor surfaces.
