Abstract
Curable compositions which are used in the manufacture of insulating parts for electrical switchgear comprise a cycloaliphatic 1,2-epoxy compound having an epoxy equivalency greater than 1 and as curing agent an aliphatic or cycloaliphatic polycarboxylic acid anhydride. The epoxy compound may be an epoxidized hydrocarbon, ether, ester, polyester, acetal or telomer and many such polyepoxides are specified. Many suitable polycarboxylic acid anhydrides are specified. The mixtures may also contain catalysts, e.g. tertiary amines, their salts and quaternary ammonium compounds, alkali metal alcoholates such as the sodium salt of 2,4-dihydroxy - 3 - hydroxymethylpentane; fillers, e.g. rutile, mica, quartz meal, rock meal, e.g. rutile, mica, quartz meal, rock meal, alumina trihydrate, calcium carbonate, ground dolomite, gypsum or barium sulphate, and fibres or fabrics of glass, polyesters, nylon, polyacrylonitrile, silk or cotton; and reactive diluents such as vinylcyclohexene monoxide, 3,4-epoxy-tetrahydrodicyclopentadienol - 8, 3,4 - epoxy - hexahydrobenzal glycerol or 3,4 - epoxy - cyclohexane - 1,1 - dimethanol acrolein acetal. In the examples, a polyglycidyl ether of bisphenol A and phthalic anhydride are also used for the purposes of comparison.
