Abstract

A heat-curable resinous composition having flame extinquishing properties comprises (1) an unsaturated linear polyester of a dihydric alcohol with (a) an adduct of maleic anhydride, maleic acid, maleic acid ester or maleic acid halide with hexachloro- or hexafluoro-cyclopentadiene, and (b) a polycarboxylic compound having a single aliphatic double bond, 2 or 3 acidic carbonyl groups, and not more than three carbon atoms apart from the carbonyl ones, (2) at least one epoxy resin with epoxide equivalent of 145-4000, (3) the reaction product of 2.1-2.5 mols. of chlorendic anhydride with 1 mol. of glycerol, and (4)-if desired a polymerizable compound free of polar groups and containing a single aliphatic double bond. In the examples, the polyester may be one prepared from ethylene glycol, maleic anhydride, and an adduct of maleic anhydride with hexachlorocyclopentadiene. In Example 1, a casting composition is prepared from this polyester, styrene, Epon 828 and Epon 1004, the chlorendic anhydride adduct of glycerol, benzoyl peroxide, silica, chopped glass fibres and antimony trioxide and was used for electrical insulation. Examples 7-14 describe powdered compositions for use in coating electrical components by the fluidized bed technique. The compositions may be free of fillers or may contain other fillers.
