Abstract

A rapid curing unsaturated polyester resin composition comprises (a) from 50 to 80 parts by weight of an ethylenically unsaturated polyester resin which is the reaction product of a polyhydric alcohol and a polycarboxylic acid or anhydride, at least a portion of said polycarboxylic component having ethylenic unsaturation, (b) from 10 to 15 parts by weight of a cross-linking compound having a terminal <FORM:1113567/C3/1> radical and (c) from 1 to 20 parts by weight of a copolymerizable ester substantially free from unreacted epoxy groups obtained by reaction between a polyepoxide and acrylic acid or methacrylic acid. The compositions can be cured by heating to a temperature sufficient to copolymerize to a thermoset condition and maintaining at this temperature for a period less than that required for compositions not containing the copolymerizable ester. Suitable polyepoxides used in forming the ester are the diglycidyl ether of bis-phenol-A, a polyepoxide of formula <FORM:1113567/C3/2> where m is 0 or an integer from 1 to 5, R is hydrogen of an alkyl substituent having 1 to 4 carbon atoms and a polyepoxide of formula <FORM:1113567/C3/3> where n is 0 or an integer from 1 to 10. In examples a polyester resin is prepared from propylene glycol, maleic anhydride, isophthalic acid, hydroquinone and styrene and in a comparative example is compounded with clay, added styrene, benzoyl peroxide and a mould release agent. In Example 3 the polyester resin is compounded with the reaction product of methacrylic acid, the diglycidyl ester of bis-phenol-A and styrene, and in Example 4 this is further compounded with clay, styrene, benzoyl peroxide and a mould release agent. The composition is moulded in glass fibre mats and plies.
