Abstract

1,183,434. Epoxy resins. CIBA Ltd. 11 April, 1968 [19 April, 1967], No. 17692/68. Heading C3B. Heat curable epoxy resin compositions comprise: (1) a polyepoxide; (2) 0À5-1À2 anhydride equivalents per epoxide equivalent of (1) of a polycarboxylic acid anhydride; and (3) 0À01-0À2 moles per epoxide equivalent of (1) of a long chain polyester: X<SP>1</SP>-A-X<SP>2</SP> in which X<SP>1</SP> and X<SP>2</SP> are carboxyl or hydroxyl groups. A is a polyester residue containing branched or unbranched alkylene or alkenylene chains alternating with carboxylic acid ester groups; the quotient Z/Q, where Z is the number of carbon atoms in the repeating unit of A and Q is the number of oxygen bridges in the said repeating unit, is at least 5; the total number of carbon atoms present in the hydrocarbon radicals of A is at least 50. Suitable polyepoxides are e.g. 3,4-epoxycyclohexylmethyl- 3<SP>1</SP>,4<SP>1</SP> - epoxycyclohexane carboxylate and its 6,6<SP>1</SP>-dimethyl homologue, 3,4-epoxyhexahydrobenzal - 3<SP>1</SP>,4<SP>1</SP> - epoxycyclohexane - 1<SP>1</SP>,1<SP>1</SP> - dimethanol, triglycidyl isocyanurate, N,N<SP>1</SP> - diglycidyldimethylhydantoin and conventional glycidyl ethers and esters. The polyester may have the formula .. or HO.R<SP>2</SP>.(O CO.R<SP>1</SP>.CO.OR<SP>2</SP>) m OH, in which R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> are branched or unbranched alkylene or alkenylene chains; the number of carbon atoms in R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> together is at least 8 and the product of m and the sum of the carbon atoms in R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> is at least 50. Alternatively the polyesters may have the structure ' or in which R<SP>3</SP> is an alkylene chain of at least 5 carbon atoms; R<SP>4</SP> is an aliphatic hydrocarbon radical; the product of (a + b) and the number of carbon atoms in R<SP>3</SP> is at least 50. A typical polyester is one prepared by condensing 11 moles of adipic acid with 10 moles of 1,6- hexanediol. The compositions may be cured by heating, e.g. at 100-200‹ C. optionally in the presence of conventional accelerators.
