Abstract

1381262 Coating compositions UNILEVER Ltd 21 Dec 1971 [23 Dec 1970] 61107/70 Headings C3R and C3B A particulate thermosetting coating composition comprises a mixture of: (1) 4 to 25% by weight of a polyepoxide resin, the average molecule of which contains at least two epoxy groups, and (2) 75 to 96% by weight of a solid modified polyester having an acid number of from 30 to 100 comprising the reaction product of an anhydride of a polycarboxylic acid and a polyester having an hydroxyl number of from 15 to 50 and a softening point falling with the range 60‹ to 130‹ C., the acid component of the polyester comprising (a) from 90-100 mole per cent (based on the total acid components of the polyester) of an aromatic dicarboxylic acid and (b) from 0-10 mole per cent of an aliphatic polycarboxylic acid or an aromatic at least tribasic carboxylic acid, and the alcohol component of the polyester comprising (c) from 0 to 100 mole per cent (based on the total alcohol component of the polyester) of a diol of the formula in which R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> are C 2-4 alkylene groups, R<SP>3</SP> is a C 3-4 alkylidene group, a C 6 cycloalkylidene group, a carbonyl group or a sulphone group, x and y are at least 1, the sum of x and y being not greater than 6 and R<SP>4</SP> and R<SP>5</SP> are hydrogen or C 1-6 alkyl, (d) from 0 to 40 mole per cent of a glycidyl ester of the general formula in which R is a saturated or unsaturated hydrocarbon radical having 4-20 C atoms or a substituted or unsubstituted benzene nucleus, (e) from 0 to 100 mole per cent of an aliphatic or cycloaliphatic diol, and (f) from 0-10 mole per cent of an at least trihydric aliphatic alcohol, the sum of the alcohol components (c), (d), (e) and (f) being 100 mole per cent. The examples describe polyesters prepared from the following compounds: terephthalic acid, the glycidyl ester of branched chain monocarboxylic acids having from 9 to 11 carbon atoms, the diether of ethylene glycol and bisphenol A, ethylene glycol, neopentyl glycol, 1,4-cyclo-hexanedimethanol, 1,6-hexanediol, 2,2,4-trimethyl-1,6- hexanediol, diethylene glycol, propylene glycol and dipropylene glycol, the polyesters being modified by reaction with trimellitic acid anhydride, maleopimaric acid anhydride, succinic acid anhydride or maleic acid anhydride, and coating compositions are formed from the modified polyesters and triglycidyl isocyanurates, diglycidyl terephthalate or a polyglycidylether of orthocresol-formaldehyde novolak. The coating compositions may be applied by powder spraying or fluidized bed processes to steel panels.
