Abstract
Liquid polyesters have their acid numbers reduced to below 10 by esterifying their carboxyl groups with a mono-epoxide in an amount of about 80% to about 230% of the stoichiometric amount calculated on the basis that one epoxide group is equivalent to one carboxyl group, whereby the carboxyl groups are converted into ester groups containing at least one hydroxyl radical; the reaction being discontinued while limited substantially to said esterification. The polyesters are those obtained from a dicarboxylic acid and a glycol or a mixture of a glycol with a minor amount of a polyhydroxy compound containing more than two hydroxyl groups: they have a molecular weight of at least 1,000, an acid number above 10 and not substantially above 100 and a hydroxyl number substantially greater than the acid number. The mono-epoxide is ethylene-, propylene-, butylene-, cyclohexene-, styrene- or hydroxymethylethylene-oxide. Reaction is effected at 50 DEG -275 DEG C., possibly in the presence of a catalyst (e.g. a mineral acid or a salt thereof, naphthalene sulphonic acid, an oxide, carbonate or carboxylic acid salt of an alkali or alkaline earth metal, a tertiary amine or an ion-exchange resin). Examples describe reacting (1) A polyester of adipic acid, diethylene glycol and pentaerythritol with butylene oxide; (2) A polyester from succinic acid, triethylene glycol and trimethylol ethane with butylene oxide; (3) A polyester from maleic anhydride, succinic acid, trimethylol propane and triethylene glycol with propylene oxide; (4) A polyester from adipic acid, ethylene glycol and propylene glycol with ethylene oxide; (5) and (6) A polyester from adipic acid, diethylene glycol and trimethylol propane with propylene oxide; (7) A polyester from adipic acid, diethylene glycol and glycerol with styrene oxide; (8) A polyester from phthalic acid, pimelic acid, ethylene glycol and propylene glycol with glycidol.
