Abstract

1522715 Sizing glass fibres BAYER AG 25 June 1976 [28 June 1975] 26537/76 Heading C3R Glass fibres are sized using an aqueous sizing agent comprising a polyester having an acid number of from 35 to 100 derived from at least 40 mol.% of an aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic C2-24 polyol having 2 to 6 hydroxyl groups, at least 40 mol.% of a C4-12 aliphatic cycloaliphatic or aromatic dicarboxylic acid and 0-10 mol.% of a C6-24 aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic mono-carboxylic acid, the polyester being neutralized with an amine or an alkali metal hydroxide. The sizing agent may also contain an organic, water-miscible solvent, a lubricant and a silane adhesion promoter, and the polyester is preferably present in an amount of from 1 to 15% by weight based on the sizing agent. The Examples describe aqueous sizing agents containing polyesters derived from 1,2-propanediol, 1,1,1-trimethy(olpropane, adipic acid, phthalic anhydride, maleic anhydride and tetrahydrophthalic anhydride.
