Abstract

1,240,403. Electrically insulating coating. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 27 Jan., 1970 [3 Feb., 1969], No. 5696/69. Heading B2E. [Also in Divisions C3 and H1] Articles are coated with a track-resistant electrical insulating composition consisting essentially of R a resin which is thermosetting or vulcanizable at room temperature, being of the epoxy, polyester, and/or silicone type, and greater than or equal to 20% vol of A, one or more anhydrous oxygen-containing compounds of Ca, Sr or Ba, which are decomposable at temperatures produced by an electric arc, liberating a gaseous compound, capable, at said temperatures, of oxidizing carbon produced by decomposition of R. A may be e.g. CaCO 3 , CaSO 4 , BaSO 4 , or an oxalate or acetate. The CaCO 3 may be coated with stearate. Also present may be minor amounts of an inert filler or thickener, e.g. silica, and/or a curing accelerator. The compositions may be used for coating by spraying, dipping, or painting e.g. on insulators e.g. glass/resin laminates and laminated wood strips employed as tension-members in staywires for overhead conductor support poles; for laminating, and for cast or moulded insulators. Examples relate to: (1) and (2): Flexibilized bisphenol epoxide resin, stearatecoated anhydrous CaCO 3 , cresol, and precipitated silica, mixed with amine-type curing resin and stearate-coated anhydrous CaCO 3 ; (3) anhydrous BaSO 4 , polysiloxane partly filled with silica powder, and a curing catalyst; (4) as (3), a proportion of the polysiloxane being replaced by a silicone oil; (5) styrenated unsaturated polyester, tertiary butyl peroxide hardener, and stearate-coated anhydrous CaCO 3 . The compositions are used for (1) coating traction-motor V-rings (2) gelcoating for a glass-reinforced resin laminate (3) for coating high-voltage insulators.
