Steel articles such as knife blades, knife springs, razor blades, and roller bearings, particularly those made from hypereutectoid steel, are austenitized and then hardened in two stages, the first of which involves cooling to within Œ 100‹ C. of the M s temperature, followed immediately by a second stage in which the steel is cooled to sub-ambient temperature to convert residual austenite to martensite.
