Новым в двигателе является процесс расширения, который протекает по времени быстрее, чем сжатие, что дает возможность получать при расширении большую мощность даже без подвода топлива, по сравнению с мощностью, затраченной на сжатии. При работе двигателя в каждом такте расширения происходит использование энергии окружающего тепла, заключенного в цилиндре. Происходит изменение энтропии (внутренней энергии) по времени. Такие положительные эффекты позволяют повысить КПД и экономичность двигателя, повысить крутящий момент, что дает возможность получать большую мощность при малых оборотах.
